I was pleasantly surprised at the positive audience reaction to this La Cage last night. Okay, opening night, so it's populated by everybody's friends and family. But that audience was just what this cast needed and they rose to the occasion. I hadn't been too impressed with the proceedings prior to this, but the music started, and the opening monologue, and suddenly they had a real show going on.
A couple of the supporting cast are really not good, but the show is carried well by the rest. Very sparse set design, but that's working, too. The band is too loud, I know that, and though we're in a cavernous church, most are good players who could be damping it way the hell down but they're not being guided. Maybe that will improve, but, oh well. It's turning out to be an okay gig. Three weekends.
