Spending a few hours now with a box set called New York Philharmonic: An American Celebration - all radio broadcast performances, most in archival sound - but if you love American music it's a must-have.  Ten CDs (two five-CD boxes) filled to the brim with great or at least interesting music (although I'm not sure how forward I'm looking to volume two's more modern works - we shall see) - lots of Copland, a wonderful performance of Hanson's Symphony 2 with Hanson conducting, Charles Ives, Virgil Thomson, Bernstein, Diamond, Harris, Schuman, and many others.  Very enjoyable.  I'm on disc three at the moment.

It was a long day but productive.  I left the office  at 8:30 pm and drove to a clients house for a 9 pm closing.

The borrower was  an attorney and since I had already provided him with a electronic version of his documents to review he signed very quickly.

The peach tree finally seems to be coming back.

Do you like peach jam?

I love peach jam, but the peach tree doesn't produce fruit. It's just a nice tree when it's covered in leaves.

Then I hope to see a photo.

I know you know that Richard Sherman hurt his back a month ago and has been in rehab since doing it - he called me today and it was so great hearing his voice and he's in fine spirits and healing and hopes to be home in about a week-and-a-half. I cannot tell you how I love and adore this force of nature. He told me he's rereading all my books and that they're making the days go by faster and making him laugh and feel good. I can't even. The sweetest man who ever lived.

That's so nice!

Yes it is.

Other than the archival sound for most of the older material, these performances are pretty amazing.  And there are a few things from the 80s and 90s that sound great.  And the music - Barber, Copland, Rorem, Chadwick, Gershwin, Hanson, Harris, Schuman - amazing stuff.  I have a lot of this stuff in other performances and great sound, but some of what I'm hearing here would have to be considered definitive.

And Stokowski blowing the jernt apart with sixteen brilliant minutes of Bernard Herrmann's Devil and Daniel Webster - literally the first time I've EVER really liked this music.

A Boy Named Charlie Brown has arrived in Tumwater!  I'm listening to it right now and it's delightful!

The Trip to Bountiful actually has a performance tomorrow, too.  It's a bought house for some business (I never heard), and they gave away/sold the tickets for their own purposes.  Someone on Saturday said that it's supposed to be a pretty full house, so hopefully they enjoy it.
