BK, I think that if you could give a gift to the classical music (Sibelius) lovers, like the ones you have given to the musical lovers, you should do it.

Well, the 5th Avenue's The Secret Garden was wonderful!  I love the show.  I've seen it twice before...the first time at the 5th Avenue in the first (i think) Broadway national tour.

In the curtain speech, the artistic director of the 5th Avenue Theatre said that this was a new version...and that Lucy Simon herself was in the audience!  She stood up and waved.  We were in the first row of the upper level (GREAT seats) and we looked over the edge and saw her!  Pretty cool!

It's a co-production with Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington D.C.  It played there before coming here.

She wrote the score (Marsha Norman wrote the book and lyrics) and is the sister of Carly Simon!

It was nominated for (but didn't win) the Tony Award for best score (among others), and they were robbed...in my humble opinion.

Looking HERE, it turns out that I saw the first national tour, but at Seattle's Paramount Theatre, not the 5th Avenue.  In the tour, we saw Roger Bart, Audra Ann McDonald, and Amanda Naughton as Martha (she was on Rupert Holmes' REMEMBER WENN).  I remember finding my program from that tour several years later and those were the names that I recognized.

I almost forgot!  This was a "new version."  Some songs were dropped ("Round-Shouldered Man"), a couple were reworked ("A Fine White Horse" is essentially the same song, but a couple lines changed and renamed "A Brand New Coat"), moved ("Wick" now opens act two), and there is at least one new song ("The Man in the Moon" in place of "Race You to the Top of the Morning").  I think that it was all really well done, especially all the performers. :D

I liked all the original songs. Are the new ones any better?  Where there any other book changes? Are the ghosts still there?

Saw it on Broadway with most of the original cast.
