I've done 3 radio shows this week to talk about my new novel, JACKIE GOES TO DIXIE, and I'm already booked for 2 more next week.

The one question that the interviewers always ask is: "During your years as a Hollywood publicist, you represented many famous comedians (e.g. Jack Carter, Jackie Vernon, Stanley Myron Handleman, etc.) and you knew several others (e.g. Don Rickles, etc.). Which one is your central character, Jackie Moss?"

My answer: "None of them. Jackie Moss is an original character, but he would not exist if I hadn't known them."

I was slightly influenced by DR John G. mentioning this one and I'd already heard good things about it, so: the new Criterion release of The Marseilles Trilogy. Blind buy at sale price, never seen it. Don't know how soon I'll get to it, but it's here and waiting for me.

And now, if you are enamored, for any reason, of any of these films: Run -- don't walk -- to acquire Blow-Up, Ghost World, Straw Dogs, They Live By Night, and Ozu's Good Morning. In my ever so humble opinion, these are fabulous transfers, with fabulous extras, every one of them worth the wait for proper HD Blu-ray treatment. This is Criterion at the top of their game. I love Criterion, but I accept that they can let their pants down a little on something once in a while. Not here. These inspire the cliche, "why, it's like seeing this film for the first time".

Back in the early or mid-1960s the Khachaturian piano concerto was performed by the local symphony (I don't have the program and don't remember who played it), and my piano teacher made me aware of the flexatone in advance so I'd appreciate its presence. At the concert I could see the person holding it and could just hear it enough to enjoy ts enhancement to the melody -- which was thrilling to me and I ordered a study-size score the next day.

Anything by Marcel Pagnol is aces in my book. I snatched that trilogy up so fast, you'd have thought it was made of of chocolate or gin.

So, what novel did you start, Jane?

I have 80 it so pages in the last volume of Proust. I'm taking them about five or so at a time. I can feel the impending ending with a sense that I'll likely never have a literary journey like this again. It's taken almost a year. And the emotions that the ending brings are as convoluted as some of the sentences.

I went for a nice swim this morning. More often than not I have the pool to myself. Last time I had to share it but at least the other person was an adult doing laps as well. This morning it was all mine again

A vinaigrette with mustard in adiition to the oil, vinegar, salt and pepper is. Not that orange-y sweet stuff.

We had an audience probably mostly friends and family, but they really enjoyed it! They laughed at the right places, and applauded loudly. I did goober a couple of my guard lines, but I got through the scene. My excuse (and I'm sticking to it

) is that I only got the role last week! I'm sure that it'll be perfect tonight.

After the show, the whole cast went to dinner (I called it deli-style, but really it was a buffet) which wasn't great, but not bad...not really worth $15, though.
