I have spent almost an hour in automated phone system hell, cancelling Mom's supplemental health insurance and AARP membership.  Then I decided to call the business office at her retirement community, pressed 2 for the business office, and got connected to the voicemail of someone who left there earlier this summer.  I called back, pressed 1 for the operator, asked to speak to someone in the business office, and got the voicemail of someone who said she would be back in the office August 15.  Third time, the operator said, "She just hasn't changed her voicemail."  Ya think?

A day of hardship. I have a composer friend, Jay, who is in the last stages of his fight against cancer. His hospice worker is apparently a trained singer who also plays harp, which is providing him some comfort. My friend, Carol, who knows Jay better than me, just returned from saying goodbye. It's hard.

The goofiness I've encountered from this business office over the past 3 years instills no desire to become a resident there any time soon.  And I'm their target market!

I made my eclipse-viewing box this morning out of a Cherrie-O's box. Never one of my faves.

I hope I have a box of cereal  to make glasses with.

No glasses but a reflector.

We took longer than expected dropping off our car this morning and picking up a rental & didn't have time to finish my box.  We walked along the path as the eclipse began and looked through various home made versions other people had made, including the box.  I really wish I had purchased glasses, they were super cool.

Well, I've had two very productive phone calls this morning and the Ohio trip is on.  My brother Randy is lending me some money to get through my waiting on an invoice to be paid, the major reason I am currently flat.  My other problem was that I simply cannot afford at this time the $600+ car rental, and both Randy and our DR Ginny have volunteered to be my chauffeurs for my visit.  This is a huge relief.  Gasoline I can afford.

So look out, Ohio!

This is great.  When I fly to L.A. with Keith we rent a car.  I no longer do so when I go alone.  Friends generously drive me and I take taxis for short distances.  In the future that will likely be Uber or Lyft.  Even with a taxi between the airport the cost is less than renting a car.  I stopped driving in the city because of my shoulder and admit it is much nicer.

I had just completed the phone call with DR Elmore when my phone rang again.  It was one of Mom's last living friends in Michigan, Betty, who was our next-door neighbor in Detroit from about 1960-68.  She's 96, which is closer to Mom's age than I'd thought, and we talked for almost an hour.

This is very nice.

Back from a good meeting with set designer.  He'd already come up with an idea, which after looking and thinking I liked with a couple of adjustments - the one decision to come and he'll do two designs so I can see what each idea would look like - well, same design different materials - one steel-looking, one wood-looking - he designed it with wood and that may, in fact, work best for this.  It's basically a unit set with two really fun moving staircases that can become many things.  The band will be on an upper platform where scenes can also take place - but it's a very open design, which he knows I want.  Also there will be projections.
