My doctor's appointment on Feb. 20 was cancelled by my HMO and I had to reschedule.  My new appointment is March 26!  Thank God it's nothing serious.

At least you weren't dressed and ready to go ;)

Actor John Mahoney has died.

Oh, no! :( I haven't watched "Frasier" reruns on any regular basis but literally just last night (actually, very early this morning), an episode was on when I turned on my TV.  I just left it on and watched it.  It was still very funny!

Dad is in the hospital with pressure ulcers, which I’m told are akin to bed sores. He will not be going home until home health care is in place. In the meantime, he may go to either a nursing home or rehab place.

How Mom will react to all of this is beyond me.

I am so sorry John.  I did not realize your father was basically bed ridden though I knew he was not doing well.  Bed sores are a big problem in nursing homes and hospitals.  Wherever he goes be very vocal that he gets a mattress topper to help reduce these.  :(

Vibes to all of you, John G!

My folks were at first resistant to home health care, which meant someone always being around (at least much of the day), but they've grown to really take comfort in it.

It sounds like they got some good which makes it easier.

I find this encouraging for those of us who know that this could be in our futures, too. I'm glad your folks are comfortable with it now.

So following up from last night, the brand Arm & Hammer was in existence for a few decades before the original tycoon Armand Hammer was born.  So he was named for the Arm & Hammer products, I guess.

This is from wiki:

"It is often claimed that the brand name originated with tycoon Armand Hammer: however, the Arm & Hammer brand was in use 31 years before Hammer was born. Hammer was so often asked about the Church & Dwight brand, however, that he attempted to buy the company. While unsuccessful, Hammer's Occidental Petroleum in 1986 acquired enough stock for him to join the Church & Dwight board of directors. Hammer remained one of the owners of Arm & Hammer until his death in 1990."

I never met Armand Hammer, but I knew one of the attorneys for Occidental Petroleum who worked closely with him. I recall my friend going to Russia with AH to negotiate a deal for Russian paintings. It was quite exciting. It's hard for me to think that AH was the great-grandfather of Armie Hammer. Grandfather, yes, but not great-grandfather.

Jane - yes, our neighborhood is alternately known as "Hell's Kitchen" and "Clinton."  By some point in the 1990's, the area had become an extremely desirable and pricy area, but for a long time before that, it was not a desrable area at all.

It was very nice when I was there 😊

LOL, if you mean when you were here with the HHW group, yes, the neighborhood had gotten better, cleaner and more costly by then.

But I like the idea that everything was nice when you came here!

tune of MAME

You keep the pushers off of our street
Jane!
You make our grimy neighborhood neat
Jane!
You made the price of rentals go climbing til they’re totally insane
There’s been some happy switchin’ here
You brought the hip and rich in here
It don’t feel like Hell’s Kitchen here
Jane!

Cute, Fred.

Charming photos from Jrand.
You need a treadmill for extreme weather days.

I could walk on a treadmill forever and it would never get me to Aymsley's house!

That rather sums up the limitations of a treadmill.

Is this the same complaint as before?

Interesting to hear that word today:  There's an article in today's Times that when men complain about illnesses, they tend not to call them "complaints," but "updates" to their family about what's going on.  But their wives and girlfriends disagree.

I'm having trouble linking the article, but this is from the article'

"I, personally, do not complain much when I get sick. It’s true that I provide for the people around me running updates about the type and quality of my illness, the intensity and character of its effects, the particular sounds of the cough, the volumes and colors of phlegm discharge and my own feelings about all of the above. But these communiqués, whether sent as text messages or shouted at my girlfriend from across the apartment, are useful news bulletins, provided in the spirit of CDC alerts. They’re not complaints. Me? I don’t complain. I update."

I find this very funny. "Communiques"? "News bulletins"? Oy!

Tomorrow I must brave the dental chair again as we begin Root Canal #2. I have some concerns. At least I have painkillers on hand. And soup. I've also cleared my calendar as much as I can in case it wipes me out. I hope it doesn't, but I like having as few pressures on me as possible.

Last night I watched the last episode of BONES. I really love the show and have been grieving over its end. I will say that it ended more positively than it might have, and I think that was a good choice.

Me too.  As a matter of fact, I'm watching an episode right now on COZI TV.

My sister and niece both loved this show.  My sister was very sad when this ended.

Tonight's episode of the Masterpiece Theatre Victoria dealt with the Irish famine of 1845-1852.  Quite heartbreaking.  I love this series.

Well, I must be off.  I'm going back to my parents' house to give back my mom's phone to her.  I'll show her what I've learned and she'll finally be able to check her voice mail! ;D

Be back later.

I'm exhausted.  I finished proofing - making yet more cuts (I've cut three entire pages out of this go-through - doesn't seem like that much, but every one of the cuts helps and makes everything smoother.  But the most interesting thing was getting to the final scene of the book.  As I read it I realized that the emotion I wanted to put there was just a little too much, and it made one of the characters seem weird for not reacting more to it.  It seemed too long and repetitive, too.  So, I'd had an idea when I was originally writing it and I went back to that for one paragraph and boy did that help, then I cut stuff and rewrote the final three pages, using some of the same dialogue, writing some new dialogue and cutting out the stuff that didn't work.  It's much quicker and simpler now.

After I'd run all the other changes by Muse Margaret, all of which she absolutely loved, I read her the ending as I had it, then read her the new version and she instantly liked it better.  We both liked the original, but both of us felt better about this calmer version, where the character is more in control of her situation.  So, I entered all those fixes and I am DONE.  I got new copies to the proofers.

I think I first saw him that amazing Lincoln Center production of House of Blue Leaves with Swoozie Kurtz, Stockard Channing, Danny Aiello, Ben Stiller and Julie Haggerty. He was the star and he was sanity itself until he went insane. Wonderful production, wonderful show.

I remember Woody Allen was in the audience that day.

Dad is in a hospital room now for the night at least. And his spirits seem to be good. When my brother-in-law asked him, for me, how he was doing, he responded that he felt like he'd been run over by a train but "other than that, I'm fine."

Mom is exhausted from what I hear. I will call her in the morning.
