Is that Merman story supposed to be endearing? ;D

This is certainly endearing, from her wikipedia page.

"She also volunteered at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center working in the gift shop or visiting patients."

That is nice.  I hope she was careful with her language in the hospital, depending who she was visiting with.

And she'd probably ask you the same question she asked Loretta Young!

I once had lunch with retired publicist Robert Ullman and Playbill editor Louis Botto and they had me rolling on the floor with Ethel Merman stories.  Once, onstage in Call Me Madam, the stage crew was so noisy that she stopped a scene, said to the audience, Excuse me, turned upstage and yelled, Shut the F**k up!!!

Then, as if nothing happened, she resumed the scene.  I love her!

Probably.  Since she knew how Loretta Young felt about swearing, and it was her show, I think it was rather rude not to care about Young's feelings.

I think Ethel was Ethel and cared little for others' feelings.  She may have also felt Young's faux-piety hard to bear.  I had heard the event happened in the 1930s when they were both at Paramount Studios, and Young would have been one more star on the lot.

I think you're right DR ELMORE - as far as I can find out, Merman NEVER appeared on Loretta Young's television program......  Hell.....she was never even on WAGON TRAIN, and everybody did that show!

I spoke to our DR ChasSmith.  They are in process of removing fallen trees from driveway.  He's hoping the road will be accessible by tomorrow night.  His insurance company may be flying a drone over to check out the damage.

DR elmore, when you say "they are in the process of removing...." I hope they are not doing the work themselves.

Elmore did Chas say if they had any expectation when they'll get their power back?

I saw IT'S ALIVE at the drive in!  Wow! The ad campaign was killer!

I saw it in a university film class, but my glasses had broken, so I sat up front and watched it in a semi-blur. It was wonderful.

I love it. Then again that sort of reminds me of Sondheim's comment that was rather like a trained dog.

Watching an old TV version of Design for Living with Daniel Massey, Jill Bennett and John Wood. Fun stuff, especially in comparison with the Lubitsch movie.

What's interesting is that in the Lubitsch movie, the leading lady's name is Gilda, pronounced with a J sound. Noel Coward provided the introduction, and he pronounced it the same way.

But in the TV production, they pronounce it Gilda with a G, like the Rita Hayworth movie.

LOL I never heard that Ethel Merman story....

How can they do LITTLE WOMEN without the "theatricals"??

It's less than three hours and I think we're getting "Scenes from Little Women"; Mark Adamo;s dreadful opera takes a similar approach.

That opera is a bore.

My visit to the dentist was not great. A cavity and another tooth that is slightly broken and needs to be smoothed out.

The company decided to do something new, which was odd. They're now paying us a day in advance, so my paycheck appeared in my account this afternoon. Except ... they didn't tell anyone. Needless to say, a few of the 32,000 of us were a bit freaked out.
