Well, I must be off.  I'm going to meet with my friend Margo to see the filmed-on-Broadway production of Bandstand at the movie theater!  I like the cast recording.  We'll see if I like the actual show.

Be back later.

In 1983-85 I worked for a Canadian book chain, Classic Books, at 48th and Sixth Avenue, where a Gap now stands.

Some time during that period, there was a book signing for Connie Francis.  She was a lovely lady, very friendly to the staff, and I doubt we sold a single book.  That poor lady sat at a table of books for hours, and I would swear that no one stopped or purchased a book.

That sounds so strange.  Had there been publicity for this?  (Was this around the time of the "Where the Boys Are" film, the one that Howard McGillin was in?  Or was it before that?)

Did the store staff are an effort to be nice to her, once they saw what was happening?

Back from chicken tenders (TEENY) and a side Caesar salad with so much dressing I had to send it back - those who know me know I'm all about the dressing, but this I couldn't even see the lettuce.

That reminds me of a funny quote that someone posted on a tumblr account that I follow:

"Salad Dressing" sounds a lot more elegant than "Lettuce Sauce".

Reminds me of the Piaf Salad, no dressing, called (of course) Vinaigrette rien.

Had a really fun first rehearsal, missing one person, who'll be with us on Friday when she gets in town but she'll come in knowing everything.  Great songs and I can see the show order I made last night will work really well.

I am so goddamned pissed.  I started running water for a bath, Randy called me about an offer on the property,  we started talking, and I flooded the bathroom again.  Val's angry, the neighbors below me are unhappy, I have a mess on my hands, and I am ready to kill.

Oy!  Oy Oy Oy!  So sorry to hear that!

I'm listening to one of the greatest albums ever made.  There is no other way to say it.  I'm so glad I've been going through all these boxes.  The album?  Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, Porgy and Bess, arrangements/orchestrations by the brilliant Russ Garcia (he also did the Mel Torme version a few years prior to this, but the two resemble each other not a whit).  The 1958 stereo cannot be beat by those who make albums today, the orchestra sounds incredible, and Ella and Louis are at the top of their considerable game.  A masterpiece.

Then I'll be listening to the Swingle Singers Christmas album, followed by a MJQ CD (The Comedy), followed by the group that was the precursor to the Swingles - Les Double Six - some of the same singers, including Christiane Legrand.  Have no idea what I'm in for.

I bought the Mel Torme version of Porgy and Bess today. Haven't had time to listen to it. I do have the Ella/Louis version. Great stuff.

Beginning to watch Straight, No Chaser, a documentary on Thelonious Monk. The music sure sounds good.

Had an excellent slice of New York-style pepperoni pizza tonight. Really hit the spot.

I didn't care for the sub as much. The bread was sweet and puffy and inconsequential.

I finished my third Andrew Sean Greer novel today. The Story of a Marriage. It was an early work of his and his least successful yet. It read more like he had an agenda, which is never the best way to write. A little too strident.

I'm almost finished listening to Red Rising (I started before the trip). I didn't like the beginning, which had far too much exposition, but the action in the last 2/3 is fun and fast-paced. It's kinda like a Martian version of Game of Thrones. There is very little character development, which means a TV mini-series or series could be very good.

What a sad movie, despite the excellence of the music. The man was just not mentally right, despite his musical genius. A harrowing depiction of how insanity can destroy a life.
