Question for NEW YORK dear readers....

Do the natives pronounce route: rowt or root?

I pronounce it rowt, but I'm from Ohio.  The reason I brought this up is because most New Yorkers I know are not from New York City or State originally.  I would suggest seeing what the preferred pronunciation is in the dictionary and using that.  Even if Neil Simon's characters are native New Yorkers, they are well educated.

And of course, Nat King Cole and everyone who sings the song Route 66 pronounces it ROOT. :)

I took my car in for service today. I was worried about it. Based solely on mileage the car only needed an oil change. But if you consider years, too, which I tend to forget, it was way overdue for much more. The owner of the garage said that some of that overdue stuff might not actually be necessary, so they did a thorough check and I got off with a relatively small bill. Had I taken it to the dealer, that would not have been the case.

At first I thought a "wellness check" meant money.  But I get it now.

That was what came to my mind, too.

When I lived in upstate New York, folks there pronounced it root.

Too long day at work. Most of it was spent at a group meeting and planning session that was too trivial and therefore stressful. It was not nice to see that a group I have worked hard with has gone behind my back to get money to hire people to do the work that my team provides. We have plenty of work, so it won't affect us that way, but our work has been good and fast, so I don't understand it.

Then, the breakfast and lunch were both dreadful. Stale mini-bagels and unripe fruit for breakfast; steam-tray hamburgers for lunch with an overdressed salad on the side and sweet potato salad.

I pronounce the highways root.  I might ask a person what rout they are taking or what root they are taking.  I suppose it depends on my mood.

Moving to Washington I thought we would see more of her but we didn't see her at all.  And now she has left the state.
