My sister-in-law is from Thailand so she's Buddhist, my 27 year old nephew is too old for big celebrations (he says) and sometimes says he's atheist, my brother and I are non-practicing Protestants so we just go out for a fancy (expensive) dinner that I pay for and call it a day.

My dad is the only one in my immediate family who is religious. The rest of us pretty much are all atheists. And since we're all adults (my niece is 34), we just exchange names and buy very few gifts. It works for us.

Dear Jan, I am honored that a rescue dog has been named after me. Thank you.

The New York shelters will not resume euthanasia until Jan. 2, but I noticed on yesterday's adoption lists ( http://www.nycacc.org/adopt/adoption-search ) that the number of dogs in the Manhattan shelter has swelled from 3 pages (9 dogs) on Dec. 22 to six, and that a lot are old dogs. I guess the stories of people dumping their older dogs for pups has more truth than I hoped. Even sadder, this is the list of animals the ACC has determined as good for adoption. There's still the unseen list of sick animals and animals judged to be unadoptable.

Animals are not cars, people!

The cold is finally showing positive signs of moving its ass. The congestion no longer feels like a block of concrete between my ears, and the chills and throbbing pain in my joints, eyeballs, and teeth have moved on. I feel much better this morning, so I hope this is pretty much over.

It is a shame about the New York Shelters. In my area, there are no-kill shelters and then there are many private groups that go to the kill shelters and take in dogs to their organization.
