DRvixmom, I'm glad you didn't hyphenate your names! I think portmanteau names may have worked with British lineage, but I find them in contemporary New York rather a joke, sometimes a vestige of the feminist movement and a lot of times on the Upper West Side a sign of pretension.
My sister's solution when she married (the second time) was to simply keep her maiden name. Fine for her, but her daughter's name doesn't match hers. Of course, if my sister had had her way, the daughter's last name would have been the same as hers, leaving the sperm donor out of the picture entirely.
Der B and I would probably hyphenate, if we could. In which order would be argued about, of course.

And, for those who were wondering, der Brucer is doing nicely. He's been busy with family and politics, and leaves it to me to keep him posted on what's happening here at HHW. He keeps me posted on what's happening with our friends elsewhere. Now, if I could just get him to decide about going to NYC in March...
