TOD - DR vixmom, I've also "fallen" for a Schlotzkey's sandwich - grilled chicken, Jarlsberg cheese, spinach, and roasted red peppers on sourdough (?) toast.  Had it for the first time Saturday evening and can't wait to get back for another.

Here in the Cincinnati area, Izzy's is the premier deli - they make a great Reuben and wonderful beef barley soup to accompany it.

Vixmom, the book you're describing is not the paperback edition (and true 1st edition) that you posted.  I actually have the one you're describing published by MacMillan.  Needless to say, I did not pay the price that it is now going for...But I'm delighted to see that is now worth over three times what I paid for mine.

I have complete set of those Brown MacMillans and they've all gone up considerably since when they were first published in the mid-eighties.

Another hot sandwich I learned to make from my mom:  1 bottle of chili sauce, grated cheddar cheese (about a cup and a half/2 cups), chopped black olives.  Mix together and spoon mixture into hot dog buns.  Wrap in foil, individually or in pairs, and refrigerate.  Heat, wrapped, in oven at 350 for about 30 minutes.  Great make-ahead item.

Now I'm hungry for a hot sandwich.

I just took a test. I didn't study for it, but I'll get an A. Just you watch.

That's all the news.

DR JMK how is the family?  Any job news from DW BETSY yet?

Thanks for asking.  We are still, unfortunately, sick, though thankfully slowly on the road to recovery.  Everyone who has had this dreadful thing has said it holds on for weeks, and we are sadly finding that to be the truth.

Betsy has pretty much made up her mind not to do the radio gig, though they came closer to getting her this time than any recent time (Betsy tends to get broadcasting offers at least once or twice a year).

Oh, a coney dog sandwich.  Now I want one, too.  I think I will have that for dinner.  With corn chips.

I meant to tell you all about my treasure digging at Rodgers & Hammerstein yesterday.  It all began with a nicely funky chord in "Something Wonderful," that has never appeared, to my knowledge, in any published version of the song, but it is in Russell Bennett's scoring.  The question over the chord led to my digging out Trude Rittman's file on THE KING AND I, and sure enough, the chord is in the ms copy of the song.   This file gave me an excuse to look through Trude's work on the show, including her pencil sketch of "The Small House of Uncle Thomas" and all the songs as they existed in rehearsal.  There was a long extended scene for Anna, with Lady Thiang acting as translator, about her late husband Tom, which led into "Hello, Young Lovers," which I'd love to hear. as well as "Waiting," which Dear Friend BK recorded for LOST IN BOSTON.  In the same storage carton were Russell Bennett's orchestra scores for these two numbers as well as the Kralahome's "Now You Leave."  A good time was had by me!
Definitely a day worth celebrating!

Fans of Sergio Mendes alert:  check out the British group Sirius B, especially their 3rd CD "Bagunca"--you will not be disappointed.  I missed posting on Sergio's 64th birthday last week, February 11th.  Along with Julius, one of the people who made A&M my favorite label of the late 60s and early 70s.

Just did a little research on THE CASE OF THE DANCING SANDWICHES...The paperback (its cover posted here) is listed on my trusty book site as starting out at $95 dollars and the top price for the same book is around $1,700.  Average price for it is between $150-250.  This also goes for the MacMillan edition.  There is actually a magazine version (it's first actual appearance) going for $150.  Lowest price for which it can be had is $95.

Dear Friend BK, about the reading on March 18, the answer is no.  If I stepped into the book shop, after being absent since 1998 or so, the event would no longer be about you and your books, which is what it should be; I would have to deal with the owners, anyone I know still working there, and all the catching up.  I love the  shop and I love many of the people I worked with there, but my feelings about my time there, from health insurance to event invitations after I left, is too  complicated to sort through in an evening about you, not me.
I can think of one way around the problem: drop by the book shop a few days ahead of the reading, and get all of your "business" taken care of ahead of time.

The big flaw with this plan is that there will always be people who aren't there on your drop-in date, who will be there at the reading.   :P

Correction:  Top price for Dancing Sandwiches is $1750.  Of course, I can't see anyone paying that ludicrous price for it when the same book can be had for as low as $95 or in the mid-hundreds.  That is one of the nice things about the internet and used books.  It is a great price leveller.  Now if I had a copy of the paperback I would, of course, immediately be valuing it at the $1750 price!

Last night, S. Woody wrote:

Um. . . . you must not watch the show. The fellow that Charlie shot four times in the chest last week had no backstory because he was on the island already when the plane crashed. No, he didn't turn to the camera and say that, but there never was a backstory with him.

Sheesh!  Yes, I watch the show!  Der B and I plan our Wednesday viewing around Lost, Alias, and Good Eats.  I made mention of that earlier in yesterday's posts.

I was making a joke!

I know Good Eats is the only one of the three shows that is intentionally funny (and breaks the fourth wall), but....oh, bother.

(And, with my luck, only Jose will get that reference.)

I also love me a good barbecued beef sandwich, brimming with meat and sauce, with an emphasis on the latter.

My hair appointment has now been changed four times.  First it was ten tomorrow, then it was three-thirty tomorrow, then it was back to nine-thirty, and now it is today at 2:30.

But I think they learned with Ruben's less than fantastic sales and solo concert appearances that the guys have to have "poster boy" potential in addition to being able to sing. With the girls, it doesn't seem quite as important to be sexy and have a good voice, but I noticed that a MAJORITY (not all) of the guys that got through were more potentially marketable as sex symbols as well as singers. It's the Josh Groban syndrome.

Josh Groban is a sex symbol?? :P

DRvixmom, I'm glad you didn't hyphenate your names!  I think portmanteau names may have worked with British lineage, but I find them in contemporary New York rather a joke, sometimes a vestige of the feminist movement and a lot of times on the Upper West Side a sign of pretension.
My sister's solution when she married (the second time) was to simply keep her maiden name.  Fine for her, but her daughter's name doesn't match hers.  Of course, if my sister had had her way, the daughter's last name would have been the same as hers, leaving the sperm donor out of the picture entirely.

Der B and I would probably hyphenate, if we could.  In which order would be argued about, of course.   :D

And, for those who were wondering, der Brucer is doing nicely.  He's been busy with family and politics, and leaves it to me to keep him posted on what's happening here at HHW.  He keeps me posted on what's happening with our friends elsewhere.  Now, if I could just get him to decide about going to NYC in March...

Maybe this is a good thing.  It gives me the opportunity to suggest you mention to your "stylist" that you swim and use the jacuzzi...he may want to avoid using "lightening" chemicals that might react negatively to whatever chemicals you might use in pool/jacuzzi.

TOD: The Quiznos franchise has just come to Deer Park (taking over space in a vacated store so I am not cranky about it!)

I have fallen for this:Chicken Carbonara
Chicken, bacon, mozzarella, mushrooms, Creamy Bacon Alfredo Sauce
And I just may have to have one for lunch...

I love Quizno's.  There is one only a quarter of a mile from where I work...certainly within walking distance.  One of my favorites is the Turkey Ranch and Swiss. MMM. ;D I think I will have this for lunch today!

DR ELMORE what a great opportunity to look at Trude Rittman's original music.  I love THE KING AND I score....and Lady Thiang is a wonderful character.  I love the way she was played in ANNA AND THE KING the movie by Gale Sondergaard - especially when she told the story of the tree.

DR GEORGE did you listen to ME AND JULIET yesterday?  I like the score.  There are many songs that I listen to over and over.  "Marriage Type Love", "That's the Way It Happens", and "Keep It Gay" are all a lot of fun.

I did.  I enjoyed it but I didn't love it.  There were some songs that I liked much more than others, but I need to listen to it some more, though.  I'm very glad that I got a copy (thanks again, Larry!!)  Now I have the three forgotten Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals (Me and Juliet, Allegro and Pipe Dream) on CD. ;D
