I have long been fascinated by the Lorenz Hart version for "On Your Toes":

Remember the youth mid snow and ice
Who bore the banner with the strange device
Excelsior!

I had no idea it was beginning of a Longfellow poem:

A youth, who bore, 'mid snow and ice,
A banner with the strange device,
Excelsior!

I think Hart only rewrote that so he could rhyme Excelsior with "... in Chelsea or ..."

Twenty-two pages so far - two forty-minute breaks, but I'm going for the gold. Notes will be up late, because I'm finishing this puppy tonight come hell or high water. I'm in the big final sequence and after I wrap that up in four or five pages, then it's just another few pages to tie things up.
