She talked about how she met Vicki Lawrence, who had sent her a fan mail with a photo in it. They needed someone to play her younger sister in a sketch that they were planning. Carol called her up. When Vicki heard that Carol Burnett was on the phone, she didn't believe. "Hi, Marsha," she said and was then embarrassed and glad for the call.

She talked about how Lucille Ball took her under her wing early on. Lucy later told a story of how "the Cuban" did everything on "I Love Lucy." He created the three-camera taping system. He worked out the scripts. he supervised sets, costumes and lighting. All she had to do was show up on Monday and act funny. After the divorce, she signed up for The Lucy Show. She went in the first week not knowing everything that Desi had done. And the script sucked. So, she realized she would have to take things in hand. She called a meeting, told the writers that the sucked and how to fix it. After that first meeting, Lucy said they added an "s" to her last name.

She talked about how Tim Curry, Bernadette Peters and she hated this full-blown production number that was originally shot for Easy Street in Annie, but nobody wanted to hear it. So, they filmed it as they were told. They wrapped production and went their separate ways. Two weeks later, Burnett had a chin job. It was tiny but noticeable. Then they were called back to film the number with just the three of them. They were going to start the scene from where Carol went into the closet looking for Annie's locket. She told John Huston about the chin job and asked him what she should do about it. His answer, she said, was one of the best pieces of direction she ever received: "Just come out looking determined."

She also had a few stories about San Antonio, from her love of enchiladas (I thought of you, Vixmom) to how her grandmother's old house had been slated to be torn down. But the city decided to move it instead. And it's now a school for at-risk children. She visited it yesterday and apparently gave them a nice donation.

Of course, she showed the Went With the Wind clip, which she said was made classic by the Bob Mackie dress. (It didn't start out looking the way it ended up.) But she also showed From Here to Maternity with Steve Lawrence and Sunnyset Boulevard.

She also showed what I think is one of her favorite scenes that she wasn't in: the dentist sketch with Tim Conway and Harvey Korman.

In short, she held the sold-out crowd in the palm of her hand, and most everyone left feeling happy.

January 21, 1959, I Want to Live at the Stadium - I found it very disturbing.  I enjoyed the second feature, too, The Big Country.

And who knew that before the Pix became the Pix it was, in the 1950s, the New Fox.

April 1, 1959 - outstanding double bill at the Stadium, which I clearly remember: Some Came Running and The Hanging Tree.

Another movie I have a crystal clear memory of seeing at the Stadium - Rally Round the Flag, Boys.  Haven't seen it since, and yet I can tell you the ending exactly.

At Bullock's, for just $595, you can get the latest TV/stereo console - amazing-looking, with a lustrous black-and-white picture.

About to open at the Biltmore: Li'l Abner.  Be still my heart.  Only Stubby Kaye is billed over the title.

May 27, 1959 - I trek over to the Picwood in Westwood to see The Mysterians.  There are certain things one simply must do.

According to Hedda's daily column, Clifton Webb will star with Pat Boone in Journey to the Center of the Earth.

So, I may cancel my appearance at the afternoon dress rehearsal of I Married An Angel and - even worse - my plans to rescue Scooter from euthanasia if no one else does.  At the moment, I want to go back to bed and stay there until the pain goes away.

I'm sore, but after playing in the halls with Annabelle, I don't think it's a kidney stone or whatever it was I went through in 2017.

Very good news!
