On to my favorite food store. No almond croissants today. I asked one of the employees, "They only leave one almond croissant each day?" (An outside vendor supplies them.) "No," she replied. "They leave four. They have a large fan base." I guess I'm not the only one who really likes them.

It is difficult to find good almond croissants.

I agree. Are croissants in general not as good as they used to be?

It might be though  I have always found it difficult to find a good croissant filled with loads of almond paste.  Usually the croissant is soggy and has barely any filling.

Can you tell I'm an ailurophile?

I am also though I don't have any now.  We usually had two to three cats with an equal number of dogs.  Then we had four cats :)

Now I'm listening to music of Arvo Part, someone whose music I know nothing about.  It's certainly from the minimalist school of minimalism, so imagine Philip Glass with soul and religiosity and you imagine what you'll get.  What's fascinating to me is that Mr. Part, at 83, the THE most performed living composer in the world and has been for years.  Does anyone know his music?  Apparently his violin and piano piece, Spiegel im Spiegel, has been used in a ton of movies.  I'm listening to Fratres, Tabula Rasa (now playing), and then I have his four symphonies (on one CD - none of them are long).  Curious to hear other opinions.

The workmen who are renovating the apartment next door found a pipe that was on its last legs. As it connects to a pipe in my apartment they needed to do some plumbing work in my shower today. I came home to find it done and a clean job. A potential mess avoided.

Wonderful!

Curiously, I've neither received a copy nor been alerted to its publication by the Moross family!  I am very excited that it's finally in print.

That's great, Larry!  I wish there was a recording of it.

My neighbor downstairs is from the Philippines, but has lived here forever. His 20-something niece, who was born in the US and recently graduated from college, has been staying with him. A neighbor who is a supporter of the president today asked the niece if she speaks English! Both niece and uncle were quite offended. Regardless of your politics wouldn't you try to be respectful to those around you? Said neighbor has now created two enemies.

I'd certainly heard the name Arvo Part but thought he was some New Age guy, which, if you think about it, is what this stuff really is - New Age classical music.  Although I'm listening to his third symphony now and that's pretty good so far.  Not so repetitious like Glass.  And very well orchestrated.

Not everyone who supports the president would ask such a question, and in Los Angeles I can actually imagine plenty of people asking this question.  Of course starting up a friendly conversation is a nicer way to obtain the answer to the question.

Jan, here's a picture of Neve from late last year:

DR George, I always picture Neve as dark. I must still be thinking of Ebonnie.

Yes, Ebonie was all black.

George, Her Majesty Queen Neve, is beautiful.  I, also, pictured Neve as dark for some reason.

Thanks, jan...not that I had anything to do with her beauty. ;)

Glad to do it!

I dozed off for a bit.  Now listening to Arvo Part's first symphony - no dozing off to that.  From his brief twelve-tone serialism period.  By the third he was firmly in tonal land, and was doing some sort of style all his own, which he had his own name for.

Lady Jane, I don't officially have any cats.  I have two, sometimes three, that I put out food and water for.  They are very skittish and won't let me near them but one is edging closer and acts like she wants to be petted so fingers crossed.

Arvo Part symphony number two is even weirder and more twelve-tone and serial than symphony one - it may even be thirteen tones.  And then suddenly at about 3:30 into the final movement, it turns completely tonal and appealing, with a great tune.  It's almost like a lightswitch went on and said, "A tune, my kingdom for a tune." He throws in one crash as if to say, "I haven't given up yet on the loud, but I will soon."
