I got all of my Oscar predictions right in the local Oscar contest, but I suspect lots of others did, too, and I NEVER win in a blind pick out of a hat.

I'll never catch up. But here's my conclusion. If the idea is to do a show that appeals to that cliche the 18-35 year old audience (and, boy, do I disagree with that idea) do not pick a 65-70 year old man to produce it, who doesn't have a clue as to what is hip or trendy...but worse, forsakes class and style for what he thinks "will appeal to those kids out there."

I nearly fell asleep 3 times. Next time I'll have more champagne and maybe I'll get lucky and just pass out.

I watched the Oscars. I was not impressed with Rock. Everything else was predictable.

The leg of lamb was magnificent. The beets and carrots, which I marinated in a mint vinaigrette after roasting the veg, was magnificent. The potatoes were underdone. I'm still a better cook than Wolfgang.

I agree completely with Pogue. Gil Cates is over seventy and he thinks he knows what's hip and happening. AND he's a bad director. AND he has no clew.

I really should try to get out and see more Oscar worthy films so that next Oscar telecast I will have ones to really root for.

I would love to see HOTEL RWANDA but I am also afraid to.

Just saw on the news that 93 year old Myron Blank died - he is man credited with introducing popcorn to movie theaters. He was from Iowa.

Just a note that John Vernon died Feb. 1. Ossie Davis died Feb. 4.

The Academy just doesn't choose to recognize the skillful work of Vernon, I guess. Clint Eastwood should have given him a shout out from the stage.

Oscars:

Best Speech: Jamie Foxx...after all is said and done, and after EVERYone said he'd win, he gave an acceptance speech of amazing grace and emotional conviction.

Worst speech: Hilary Swank's. I'd love to have heard Annette Bening's acceptance speech.

Nicest touches: Passages from "Star Trek:The Motion Picture" and "Chinatown" by Jerry Goldsmith; "Laura" by David Raksin; and "The Magnificent Seven" by Elmer Bernstein, all played in between an Oscar presentation and commercial break. All three composers died within a two-month period last year, and all three were legendary.

Worst touch: Nothing special said or done about these three composers whose contributions to film far exceeded the combined contributions of all the others listed in the memoriam. Runners-up: Hilary Swank running back to the microphone to shout over the music -- Bernstein's "Magnificent Seven." The wrong-headed decision to use Yo-Yo Ma and Bach to play under the Memoriam sequence -- a suite from scores by Goldsmith, Bernstein and Raksin would have been inspired.

Rock's worst moment: Criticizing Jude Law.
Worst overreaction: Sean Penn's comment about Rock's criticism.

Second best speech: Jan A. P. Kaczmarek's eloquent acceptance of Oscar for Best Original Score for "Finding Neverland." My first choice was "The Village" and William's "Harry Potter/Prison of Azkaban" was my second. But Kaczmarek's was my third and his speech was most satisfying.

I would definitely recommend reading the whole kit and kaboodle of posts. It will take a while, but it will be worth it to catch some of JRand's wit. Also, BK's blind hatred of Ebert.

I have the book in hardback, first edition. Well, that's what it says on the page with all the copyright and Library of Congress information, right after the title page. The title inside is simply given as Diary of a Mad Playwright. The dustcover gives the title as Diary of a Mad Playwright: Perilous Adventures on the Road with Mary Martin & Carol Channing. The cover photo is of Kirkwood, dressed in a tux, standing bwtween Mary and Carol.

Well, my plan for tomorrow is to get up early - well, 8:00 - and get all my clothes, papers, supplies, etc., packed for my upcoming trips and shows and adventures. Six weeks of "stuff" to get ready and pack. And also try to get some more shredding and organizing and sorting and purging done in the process. Hopefully, that shouldn't take all day, but if it does...

I want to get almost everything done tomorrow so that I can rest of Tuesday - and head up to Fairfax to spend some time with my nieces and nephews. I really do need some Uncle Jojo time - and the hugs and kisses from Alexandra, John Michael and Alyssa will be the perfect way to get my travels started.

So... While UMBRELLAS is playing in the background, I shall straighten up the living room, and start getting ready for bed. -I actually am quite tired already.

But I'll check in before heading to bed proper.

-Now this is proper French diction and singing!

Oh, and this sequence is my favorite - the one when the mother gets the telegram saying she owes money. The piano "noodling" is wonderful! And those vibes are swinging too!
