Watching the numbers now.  Too Darn Hot - all the kiddies are going BRILLIANT GREAT CHOREOGRAPHY.  Um, no.  It's a bunch of steps, the choreographer has no idea how to build a number, there's no storytelling, and it's truly typical of what passes today for BRILLIANT choreography.  And the never-ending light shifts are so annoying.  But, what do I know.

Hadestown - looks like something I never need to see - pretentious and like something that a college would do.  Sorry, if that's great music and lyrics, you can have 'em.

Tootsie - I'd already seen this wretched excuse for a number and it's even worse with all the hyperkinetic lighting, choreography that is completely pointless and dopey, and a fellow who sings through his nose, like most young males in theater today.

Ain't Too Proud - if I want to hear The Temptations I'll listen to them - I have come to loathe this kind of theater.

Beetlejuice - what did they think they were doing?  Most of what this is was designed specifically for the Tonys - not exactly kosher in my book because most of that doesn't happen onstage.  I have never heard more false rhymes in one number - I leave it to others.

And The Prom.  Busy, busy, busy - typical Casey choreography.  Busy, busy, busy.

I think it was once "Spring Awakening" won the Score Tony in 2006-7, even workshop folks gave up on the pure rhyming issue.

Strange choice of number for "The Cher Show" with none of the show's book's context, a bit fanciful, but a well-written  scene between Ms. Block and Emily Skinner as Cher's mom - or what the recording of "Believe" meant to re-catapult Cher's career.

For just matters of accuracy, "The Cher Show" is a musical fable in terms of the accuracy of for example "Gypsy" or "Fiorello" - content-wise, that is.  I went in knowing we never see Chaz beyond age one, never see Elijah Blue (her son with G. Allman), nor Cher's sister who most fans had seen a bit of in that era.

And that it leaves out that before Mike Nichols "discovered" her camera presence for "Silkwood," she'd had. a really nice festival-film success with "... Jimmy Dean Jimmy Dean" (a huge flop onstage, but Altman was very proud of the film).

There's something that troubles me seeing that it was the music, not people moved to make music together with these specific people.  but the singers were so corporately interchangeable.

One leaves - here's another person.  Like Ms. de La Jolla in petty cash leaves, just hire someone else to do the same thing. (Or like Menudo.)  Not a group of people making music together, but a product where it almost didn't matter who the singers were.

In the previous season, Des McAnuff's "Summer" (Donna Summer bio-show) must ahve gone through some work based on the first night reviews.   McAnuff has an expertise with this type of show - and the opening night reviews from April 2018 had been pretty harsh,, not been quite what I saw.  Major flaws mentioned in the April 2018 reviews just weren't there. I wondered if scenes were just excised

Another restless night.  I believe I had too much sugar yesterday and my body is no longer used to it.

T.O.D.

Unfortunately, we had a MAJOR storm in Austin last night.  We were not able to see the opening 10 minutes or so of the show, and the power went off again about 40 minutes in for another 10-15 minutes.

Was glad to see Altman was a character in the show. I liked that film, though I haven’t spent $20 for the DVD.

I ended up seeing some of the broadcast, not all of it, but I have the whole thing on my DVR and might skim through it tonight.

Favorite moments? I truly don't know if there are any. Least favorite? The sketches. The songs. The sketches with songs. The sketches in bad taste. The sketches that weren't funny.

Have I mentioned the sketches?

I really hate the direction the Tony Awards are going in programming: too much James Corden, too many sketches, too much silly patter - what was that strange bit with Jake Gyllenhall? - when I want to see the Awards.  They've screwed over the winners for Lighting, Costumes, Orchestrations, Set, etc. for years, but I'd like to see these people and hear what they have to say.

I was very happy for my friends Santino and Andre, whom I first saw in Ain't Misbehavin' in 1979, and with whom I worked for a couple of years on a Chicago Humanities Institute project around 2007.

I do want to see Tootsie - primarily for Santino and my friend Chuck Cooper's daughter Lily - and I would not mind seeing Beetlejuice. I'm being taken to a preview of Moulin Rouge at the end of June, and I hope I enjoy it.  It will be good to see a couple of friends in it.
