It is quiet here.  Is everyone out enjoying themselves?

We’ve just returned from taking Rob and Mary Linda and her parents out for dinner.  They’re here from Michigan helping the kids get the house ready to list.  We’re pretty useless in that department, but we can at least buy them dinner.  That’s my big outing for the weekend.

OK, dinner out isn't too much excitement.  Now relax ;)

I have a question for Ginny,

Dear Dear Reader Ginny,
I thought you were from Ohio. Why are you "Go Blue!"?

Ginny went to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.  Also, she grew up in the Detroit area-correct Ginny?

DR Laura, DR Jane is correct on both counts.  When I was finishing grad school at U of M and looking for a job I said I’d go “anywhere but Ohio.”  But jobs were available here and a great one found me, so I intended to stay 3-5 years and move on.  But then an even better job came along and I met this guy named Richard.  I may have now lived in Ohio for 46+ years, but I will never say “Go, Bucks.”

Thanks, Ginny.

I thought you and Elmore were friends from college.

Finished with my viewing - Rocketman - enjoyable but weird in certain ways.  The Elton John actor is very good.  On Wikipedia someone actually states that this is the first film from a major studio to feature a gay sex scene.  And they justify this claim by saying Brokeback Mountain and Call Me By Your Name weren't from major studios - this seems rather stupid to me.

We just watched an excellent 2019 film, THE FAREWELL, based on a true lie/story.

I made candy cane pie earlier today. It needs to sit for eight hours. But the preview from licking the pan was pretty darn good.

Not too sweet?

I liked it. And no, not too sweet. I didn't put any sugar in the whipped cream.

Did you get the outtakes on the Rocketman disc? I thought they were interesting because they touched on topics such as his work to raise money for AIDS research and raise AIDS awareness. Perhaps that a little more interesting to me, maybe because it made Elton seem like he was about more than merely music. It would have been a different movie, for sure.

Watching Woody Guthrie All-Star Tribute Concert from 1970 with Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, Odetta, Richie Havens and more. Peter Fonda and Will Geer provide the narration. Really enjoying the music.

This was an interesting movie. Apparently the concert was filmed but never seen, kind of like the Aretha Franklin concert movie, Amazing Grace. It was a fundraiser for Huntington's disease research three years after Guthrie died from the disease.

Some now-forgotten folks from 1970, such as Country Joe McDonald and Ramblin' Jack Elliott, handle the material well. I have always liked Joan Baez's rendition of Deportees, but I can't for the life of me understand why she purposefully mispronounces the Spanish word "y." She says something that sounds like "a." Comes off as pretentious.

Since this wasn't a movie and the running length is only 50 minutes, I wonder why there are 12 minutes of outtakes, includes a really good version of Joe Hardy and Baez singing one of my favorite Guthrie songs, Pastures of Plenty.

Listening to the Hollywood String Quartet play Beethoven's late string quartets - these performances are almost making me like the music :)
