We've discussed her before, but Alma Deutscher is a 14 year-old prodigy who began playing piano at 2 and violin at 3.  Last night she made her debut at Carnegie Hall in a concert of excerpts from her opera Cinderella, and her orchestral music, with her as soloist in her violin and piano concertos.

The Packard Humanities Institute, sponsors of the aborted John McGlinn-complete works of Jerome Kern and Victor Herbert, has taken her under its wing.  They produced two years ago her opera Cinderella, which is now on DVD.  You may remember as well, that I worked for them from 2001 to 2011, when they shut Toyland down.

Earlier this year, I was asked about returning to work on my edition of Babes In Toyland, and I spent part of October and November working on the editorial material.  To my surprise, on late Monday morning I received an invitation from PHI to be their guest at last night's Carnegie Hall performance.  Just after I accepted, DR JRand69 posted his comments about Dec. 12 being a good day for me.

I have no idea where this will lead, but I had a lovely visit with David Packard and his lovely daughter Arianna, whom I last saw in 2010.  Arianna now has a son Alfie, who is - I would guess - around six years old.  I had a wonderful time.

Alma is amazing as a violin  and a piano soloist.  Her compositional style is, I guess, late romantic and very tuneful.  I heard echoes of Brahms in the piano concerto, and her Viennese "Siren Waltzes" owes more to the Strausses than to Ravel.  She explained that she had no wish to write discordant, atonal music, but she proved in her intro to the waltzes that she could write dissonance and contemporary orchestra effects like violin glissandi worthy of Stravinsky.

Glad to hear that the air has been cleared.

Doing theatre creates such a volcano of emotions - sometimes it has to erupt....I always hate it when I am involved....but there you are.

Richard and I took a road trip yesterday to Piqua, OH, to visit my cousin Perry, his wife Pam, and their 2-year-old daughter Grace.  They are visiting from Georgia and staying at Pam's mother's house.  Gracie was quite wary of us, but the grown-ups had a nice visit.

On our road trip yesterday we listened, twice, to THE NEW YORKERS.  Brought back great memories of seeing the show and the talk-back panel almost 3 years ago.  How can it have been that long?

That Alma Deutscher is amazing. I remember those CINDERELLA videos, and I should watch and listen to more. I wonder if she'll eventually "branch out" some in compositional style.

We had a crazy audience-attended brush-up last night. Most of it was fine but there were a few amusing little weird things that happened. It's a fast moving show with tons of antics and props and costume changes. Should be good tonight for the mostly sold-out house.
