Sounds like a lovely and intriguing evening, DR Elmore. May some wonderful things come of it!

Last night DR Jeanne asked: The cats sharpen their claws before dinner? Do you make them open the cans?

Annabelle's vet ad I discussed this.  When cats are ready to eat, they sharpen their claws.  I suspect this is a residual holdover from the long ago wildcat days when they needed to sharpen their claws to tear open a meal.

As soon as I say the word "treat," all three cats run to scratching posts.

Yes, air is clear and he'll make a statement to the cast about it.

Good news.

We've discussed her before, but Alma Deutscher is a 14 year-old prodigy who began playing piano at 2 and violin at 3.  Last night she made her debut at Carnegie Hall in a concert of excerpts from her opera Cinderella, and her orchestral music, with her as soloist in her violin and piano concertos.

We had a crazy audience-attended brush-up last night. Most of it was fine but there were a few amusing little weird things that happened. It's a fast moving show with tons of antics and props and costume changes. Should be good tonight for the mostly sold-out house.

Have an ever better time tonight.

Interesting.  Mine just hung out in the kitchen or followed me around until they were fed.  Except for breakfast when they stayed cuddled in bed with me unless Keith fed them.

Earlier this year, I was asked about returning to work on my edition of Babes In Toyland, and I spent part of October and November working on the editorial material.  To my surprise, on late Monday morning I received an invitation from PHI to be their guest at last night's Carnegie Hall performance.  Just after I accepted, DR JRand69 posted his comments about Dec. 12 being a good day for me.

That's so cool, Larry!

I never noticed that with my cats.  I'll have to keep an eye out.

I am curious if anyone else has ever noticed that.  At least they use the scratching post ;)

DR Ginny I noticed you read The Dutch House.  Did you like it?  I have read two books by Patchett and am not looking forward to my book club pick for February.

Has anyone else read it?

I have it on reserve. No time yet to get it. I loved Bel Canto. Her other books have varied in quality.

I like Ann Patchett’s writing and, yes, I did like The Dutch House.  It may help that I’ve heard her speak at ALA and visited her bookstore in Nashville.

So, for the first time in a long time, Richard and I brought the Christmas tree up from the basement and assembled it without Rob’s help.  We put the lights on it this afternoon and will do the ornaments tomorrow.

Elmore and others asked how Nicky is doing.  I appreciate the thoughts.  I wish I knew how he was doing.  He still leaves the bedroom, goes into the guest bathroom, and howls like he thinks I can’t hear him in there.

Poor Nicky. I wonder if there are any cat whisperers around. It would be helpful to know what's going on. It's heart-wrenching.

Vibes for Nicky and TCB!

Alma is amazing as a violin  and a piano soloist.  Her compositional style is, I guess, late romantic and very tuneful.  I heard echoes of Brahms in the piano concerto, and her Viennese "Siren Waltzes" owes more to the Strausses than to Ravel.  She explained that she had no wish to write discordant, atonal music, but she proved in her intro to the waltzes that she could write dissonance and contemporary orchestra effects like violin glissandi worthy of Stravinsky.

It sounds like it was a wonderful evening. How nice for you!
