DR Larry Elmore (that is my new dream-like name for you :)):   I have performed under Marin's baton (so to speak).  I was the featured pianist at an Oregon Symphony Gospel Christmas concert many years ago.  Marin was singing along as she conducted.  I found her a bit hard to follow, but that's probably just me, as I am not a trained symphony musician.

I was attending Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, during the time they were looking for a new Conductor/Music Director.  Marin Alsop was one of the candidates.  They held a few open rehearsals and concerts in our school's concert hall.  It was fascinating watching the whole process.

She was - and still is - very passionate about what she does, about music.  And her connection to Bernstein is invaluable.  -Although sometimes I think she treats some of his music a little too reverentially, imho.

If I recall, she was one of the final two.  But she lost out to George Manahan. Who left a couple of years later to come back to NYC, and take his position at City Opera.

OBSTREPEROUS, baby, OBSTREPEROUS!  Is everyone afraid to use this marvelously marvelous word?  It's not really a ten-dollar word, so don't be afraid of it or Virginia Woolf.

Kevin's show is definitely being done in LA in July.  And I think he's trying to gather bookings around the country as we speak.

I'm gonna go through the new book one more time, I think, before printing up some more copies.  Then Miss Adryan Russ will be doing her editor thing (she does that for a living).

The word of the day is truly obstreperous!

When I was sick during the Christmas holidays, the doctor told me I was lucky I didn't have that obstreperous virus.

As for cabbages and kings....well, I love cabbage dearly...and the "after" result CAN lead to a throne...and sometimes, the throne is manufactured by Royal, a porcelain company of some note.

Last week during the Hainsie Kimlet celebrations while we had a good time and expressed ourselves, sometimes loudly, we were never obstreperous.

Definition: Obstreperous - noisily and stubbornly defiant; " those obstreperous boys"

Definition 2: Obstreperous - boisterously and noisily aggressive; "those boys kept up an obstreperous clamor"

DR Jane:  Are you watching this season's SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis?

I've been hooked all season and the paralleling story lines of the two shows in the past few weeks have me on the edge of my seat.  Can't wait for part II of each of the season finales tonight.

"Better obstreperous than leprous!", that's what I always say.

What do YOU always say?

In my CD player at work:  the studio recording to the Duke Ellington/Marshall Barer show Pousse-Cafe.  I bought this shortly after it came out and gave it to my dad (he loves jazz), but borrowed it to copy it.  I'm pretty sure that it's out of print. ::)

Good Afternoon!

Back from my walk, and back from Gruenbaum's too.  They were out of apricot hamantaschen, but the lady assured me that she was putting together a very fine assortment for me.  When I asked for a poppy-seed yeast roll, she started to take one out of the case, then hesitated... "Troost me... you vant zee ahpricot."  -Or something close to that accent.  So, I took an apricot one!
