The band is so rough on Sadie Hawkins - they'd only done the sitzprobe prior to this dress, and by the second dress and first preview it was much better. You certainly get an idea of the ballet, which I staged as Kay was out with a cracked rib, and it's really fun, but the ending is excruciating to listen to. I wasn't happy with the fiddle player at all - needed one like we had in Hit Song, who really understood that kind of thing. He got better during the run. And I cut the overture in half (having already cut it in half) after this dress and that helped a lot, but it's fun to watch. It frosts me that we never got to film again thanks to the idiot then-chair of the department who, as I've mentioned, would be fired about six months later, indirectly because of something he did involving me. That was the best thing to happen to the department. His concern was that the licensing company forbade any kind of taping and I'm thinking, yeah, so what, everyone does an archival taping to have a record of the show and staging, but he wouldn't budge. I even went to the licensing company and they were just you'd expect they'd be. I'll see if there's anything else to extract.
