TCB, I think you should play Annie. It would be the kind of stretch you need.

With many dates I can't remember without looking back on the net or documentation, I recall that "Annie Hall" the movie and "Annie" on Broadway opened within a day or two of each other.  (or maybe even the same day?)

Does the net  say somewhere what day movies opened in 1977? (pre-internet)

Would a magician with many bookings be a PRODIGIOUS prestidigitator?

Reminder of  now-non-PC joke "a nervous titter went through the crowd" and the person made believe he/she was using their hands being a nervous titter going through the crowd.

Annie the movie opened in the Reagan era. All of the political elements of the show had been cut out. It’s why you still hear outrage from some quarters when the original is staged in community theaters. People don’t realize the show was a reaction to Watergate.

I've always liked SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER

Thought is was an excellent film, particularly Taylor and Hepburn.

In fact, back when I was living in Seattle (about 1962--1963), I directed a production of the play at the Woman's Century Club.  My late future first wife (and mother of my son) played the Elizabeth Taylor role.  She was excellent.

DR JohnG, I was at the Met premiere of Mahagonny in 1979.  It was quite an exciting evening, and its anti-capitalist projections really pissed off a lot of gray-haired audience who walked out in droves in Act Three.  That Met broadcast made it to DVD, but I see it's no longer in print.

Very envious of DR Elmore being at that premiere. I was in L.A. capturing the telecast on a friend's brand new and very primitive VCR, the first any of us had. I have memories of that copy not being very good, or maybe it was bad reception of the broadcast. At any rate, the tape didn't last very long but I played it to death anyway. I also captured the Saturday afternoon radio broadcast on audio cassette, which might have been the very performance that was telecast, come to think of it. Don't remember now.

But now for the good news.

If DR John G. will PM me his mailing address which I swear I had but now I don't find it, I can provide relief from the out-of-print-ness of a certain Metropolitan Opera DVD. This is thanks to the fact that I got my Windows laptop working again (it was just a power issue) and I once again have access to a certain, ahem, special piece of software that, um, usually works. And it did, on this, just this morning.

DR Elmore, would you like a copy as well?

Yesterday afternoon UPS delivered from Petco a nice large carton containing 60 cans of Fancy Feast for my three little kittens.  It was a gift from my fifth floor lesbian neighbors whose little dog Nora died from cancer.  They are currently in exile in Boston, and the gift was greatly appreciated.

What a thoughtful gift.

Oh--also, DR Elmore--

In one of your boxes of donations to the library, you had a few homespun copies of things and I helped myself to a London Mahagonny telecast from 2015. The director is John Fulljames, the conductor is Mark Wigglesworth, and the Jenny is Christine Rice. I'm guilty of not having watched it straight through yet, but it looks like an interesting production.

I enjoy that era of Argento films. IMDb says CAT O' NINE TAILS was released in May 1971, so I would have seen it in Cleveland where I'd seen BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE the year before and thrilled to it. The next one, FOUR FLIES ON GRAY VELVET, was released after I'd moved to Hollywood, and I forget which theater it played, but I believe I found the listing for it in my all too brief foray through newspapers.com last year.

I never saw any of his later films in a theater but I've enjoyed discovering them on the quality Blu-ray releases from the likes of Synapse and Arrow. And I think it's safe to say that Argento's giallos are the only giallos I like at all. I tried one or two of Fulci's, for instance, that were just yucky for yuckiness's sake, and I have no appetite for those or any others. But Argento has such a superb visual sense, and he knew how to make those films immediately draw you in and hold you.

Thank you.  That's a very kind offer, but I own the DVD.  I think Mahagonny is the great 20th century opera.

I stepped out to post three payments and then stopped in the corner bodega for breakfast - eggs and sausage on a roll - and a few items.  The sausage was bland; I really want and egg mcmuffin!

I believe my beloved Rachel Kelly, who's on my recordings of Dearest Enemy and Eileen, is one of the whores in that Royal Opera Mahagonny.

I remember Teresa Stratus had a see-through costume, which was daring for TV back then.

Yes, and I never noticed it till years later when I had the DVD.

8.955 cases in Indiana - 436 deaths - 105 cases in my county.

Our governor and his staff and other officials speak to us daily at 2:30 p.m. and then take virtual questions from reporters.

It is a much saner version of what happens around 6 p.m. everyday on some of the cable channels.

What do you think of those two DVDs, DR Elmore?

I haven't watched them in some time.  My memory is that the Madrid recording is in English, but I prefer the Met.

The New York Times critics pick their desert island Broadway cast CDs. Oy. I don’t think I need to hear Caroline, or Change ever again. Or either version of Grey Gardens.

DR FREDDIE indeed the Broadway musical ANNIE opened on April 21, 1977, and the movie ANNIE HALL opened on April 20, 1977.

So says Wikipedia.

I always think TITANIC (the musical) and TITANIC (the James Cameron film) opened closer together than they did. The musical opened in April 1997 and the movie in December. Well, a mere eight-month spread ain't bad.
