Oh, same here. My introduction to that was my mother's Reader's Digest Condensed Books, and I'd read it a couple of times even before the 1963 film was released. I then bought the movie tie-in paperback, my copy of which is still nicely intact.

I was originally quite taken with the illustrations in the Reader's Digest version. Of course they are nothing like Robert Wise's vision, and I later appreciated them for that difference. Years later I mentioned this to friends who just happened to be dumping their collection of the Condensed Books. She pulled that volume and gave it to me so I'd be able to see those illustrations again. They're Canadian, and the RDs printed there had slipcovers, so I have a lovely memento of that moment in history. That's the volume that includes Mrs. 'Arris Goes to Paris, which I also read a couple of times back in the day.

Did you like the movie? Moss seems really intense and funny at the same time, which is how Shirley comes off in her semi-autobiographical stuff.

It's based not on a biography or memoir, but on a novel by Susan Scarf Merrell in which Shirley Jackson is the main character.

I did like the movie, but was glad I hadn't dragged Richard along. He had watched GLORIA with me the night before and SHIRLEY would have been too much feminism for him.

I agree about Elisabeth Moss, and I liked the other principles, too. And one of my favorite audiobook narrators, Orlagh Cassidy, played the dean's wife who works in the library.

I don't want the distractions and like having an ereader only. I get headaches easily. So I find it much easier with the e-ink. It's really not like reading on a device at all. And i read outside a lot. So no glare.

I read a lot of historical fiction so looking up info is less distracting than thinking about the details while reading the fiction-lol

Stanley's arrived and eaten. First time they've screwed up an order - I always order extra almonds and then I reiterate it in the special request box that I've checked that option above. And they've always gotten it right but today the didn't do the extra almonds and instead gave me extra tangerine bits - it was fine but I did miss my extra almonds.
