Just watched a couple films on the ol' Fox Movie Channel and IFC.
The former was a film by Pogue's late friend Douglas Hickox, entitled SKY RIDERS. Coburn and Culp together in one film, that is a must see. Also a character actor I like named Steven Keats. And Charles Aznavour. The movie is an excuse to have a lot of hang gliding footage over beautiful Greek locations, and as such, is breathtaking. Culp's family is kidnapped by Greek terrorists, Coburn and his crew hangglide to the rescue. The scenes of Coburn— not a stuntman— clinging to a helicopter spinning out of control are pretty amazing. Enjoyable music by Lalo Schifrin.
The IFC film was AT CLOSE RANGE. Quite well-made film, if a bit downbeat. "Live to Tell" probably Madonna's finest song.
Pet peeve: Okay, I don't watch movies on commercial tv unless I have to, but here you have a non-commercial, supposedly film-buff oriented channel in IFC, and they immediately interrupt the closing credits with noisy-promos that take up half the screen. I wonder why unions don't protest the shrinking of credits to unreadable status. But beyond that, I consider the closing credits part of the film and I don't like to have them interrupted so callously. End pet peeve.
