I still have my TONSILs...
Which always seem to become an "issue" whenever I come down with some sort of major ears/nose/throat infection/crap - like last year at this time. UGH! I used to get strep "normally" when I was younger, unfortunately(?), it was not frequent enough for the doctor to justify having my tonsils taken out. And since the procedure is highly NOT suggested for adults...
I got my tonsils out when I was 26 years old. I had gotten strep throat and was on antibiotics for 10 days. As soon as I was off the meds, it came right back. They put me on it again for two weeks. Two days after that round was done, it came back. They put me on antibiotics AGAIN for an entire month! This time, it didn't come back. They told me that since I had gotten strep three times within six months, they could take out my tonsils (and it would be covered by my insurance). When I told people that I was getting my tonsils out (especially at age 26!) everyone had to tell me horror stories. One that I really remember was that a co-worker said that he had a friend (it's always a friend of a friend

) whose anesthesia wore off as the doctors were removing a tonsil from his mouth! Fortunately, stories like that don't bother me.
Anyway, I went in to the hospital on a Tuesday morning and was in the operating room at 11:30 a.m. By 1:00 p.m., I was awake and eating the cherry popsicle to show the doctors that there weren't any problems. By 3:00 p.m., I was back home and I called my supervisor to tell her that everything went well. I had absolutely no problems with the surgery or recovery. I felt pretty good. My biggest, hugest (meaning
dumbest) mistake was that that Friday, my sister and niece and I went out to dinner (I was eating fairly easily by then) and I ordered nachos. I (sadly, painfully) didn't chew my food thoroughy enough.
SCRAPE!! OUCH!!!

There was no serious damage at all, just pain. I do NOT recommend eating nachos shortly after getting one's tonsils out.
