Bach. St. Matthew Passion - anyone know and like it? I listened to a bit of it on YouTube and found it really beautiful, at least the opening. Performances on CD run anywhere from two hours and thirty minutes to almost four hours (the Klemperer, which seems very divisive but which I found sounded incredible. Those who defend it defend his slow tempos, whereas others like these new-fangled speed-throughs in this movement called HIP (Historically Informed Performance) - I read a fun article by someone taking that movement to task as a bunch of know-it-all bullies - my kind of article
So, I might try the Klemperer. The other high marks one goes to Karl Richter. His is over three hours but still shorter than Klemperer - I didn't think the sound was as good from what I heard on YouTube.
