THIS JUST IN...

Apparently on Colbert last night, Olivia Coleman (whom you may know from Broadchurch) taught the talk show host how to say "yes" like Queen Elizabeth, whom she will be portraying in the new season of The Crown. This is how her dialect coach taught her: say the word spelled E-A-R-S, not hitting the "R" too much.

Try it!      :)

That would take a lot of practice.

Well Holy Moly.

I was reading BK's post about the Jerome Robbins/Bernstein album with great interest because I remembered finding that at a used record jernt somewhere along the years. Didn't know if I still had it, because I'd dumped a lot of records that were not of sufficient quality or no longer of interest for any reason, but I went to the shelf, and...

Voila!

I figured watching The Shining wasn't horrific enough. I had to read the instructions for the prep before my colonoscopy Monday. Now that is horrifying.

Well, that reinvents "Monday" all over again, sir.

Okay, now here's the kicker about the record album. When I pulled it off the shelf I was disappointed to see what looked like a mono issue of the Warner Bros. album. See the jacket's front cover, above. I didn't even notice the little red "Stereo" thingy on the back side. But I took the record out, and found two wonderful things. First, it was in a quality sleeve that indicated I'd cleaned it on the machine and found it to be a keeper. Second, the label had that beautiful Warner Bros. "S T E R E O" across the bottom. Ain't that something?

So, BK most certainly did have it on stereo LP...but they all look, at a glance of the jacket, like they're mono. Some may not be. But he's got the reel to reel tape coming, which is all the better. What great discoveries all around, eh?

If only my big receiver's input that I use for the phono preamp hadn't gone on the blink, I could be listening to this right now. I'll be rigging something up with another receiver in the meantime, possibly as soon as tomorrow, but we'll see.

And there it is - STEREO.  In red at the very top of the rear panel - my guess is they didn't want to spend full color dough on the cover to have a mono and stereo version, like they did for Auntie Mame - at least I think they did - have to research.  But every copy I've seen on the Internet is mono with a gray record label rather than the gold stereo label. ChasSmith, if it's easy for you can you transfer to AIFFs or WAV just so I can hear?

Just researched Auntie Mame and John Paul Jones - exactly the same - same front cover for mono and stereo and a gray mono tiny thing on the top of the back cover or a red stereo thing and then of course either the gray or gold LP label.  I wonder when they began using "stereo" on the front cover.  Rome Adventure has it but that's 1963 or 64, I think.  Will research further.

So, sometime in 1959 they made the switch.  77 Sunset Strip didn't have it on the front cover, but by the time of The Nun's Story soundtrack later that year, it was there.  So, that's solved.

So, the front covers on all the 1958 and some of 1959 front covers had nothing about stereo and, in fact, had the mono release number, i.e. B1240.  But the back cover would have that little red stereo square and the proper stereo release number of BS1240.  But I think they ultimately saw the folly of their ways because their plastic shrink wrap back then had their own Warner Bros. logo on it and STEREO writ large.  I'll have a photo in the notes.

Love this stuff. How did you research that?

I’m out on errands in the morning but should hopefully be able to transfer this tomorrow afternoon. I need to bypass the amp with its weird little problem and run directly into the digital recorder...which ought to work. Pray for that baby.

Yes it is.  Not having watched The Shining I can't compare them.

I thought that The Shining was MUCH worse than my actual colonoscopy prep.  I really didn't have much trouble with it...but maybe I was just one of the lucky ones. ::)

When I was a youngster, I really wanted a record player, but so did my sister.  So, for Christmas, My sister got a stereo with detachable speakers; and I got a little mono record player.  Of course, my sister was three years older, and I am sure there were doubts that I could take care of anything worth any more.

Over the years, I used my record player ten times more than my sister ever used her stereo, but, hey,who is keeping score.

I think Chas mentioned earlier today regarding those electronically remastered albums.  My mom had the original London cast recording of MY FAIR LADY at her classroom at school.  I used to borrow it from time to time just to have something different to listen to.

When we lived in Colorado when I was between 4 and 7 years old, my sister took piano lessons and I took accordion lessons (neither of us chose these and I think we each didn't last a year).  But when we moved up here to Washington, I started plunking around on her piano, so I took piano lessons and she never took any more music lessons, at all.

Anyway, at some point, my parents got me a pair of binoculars and an alarm clock radio.   She really wanted those and I didn't care, so we traded...my alarm clock radio and binoculars for her piano!  At the time, she loved that alarm clock radio because she could listen to the radio quietly at night, but after almost 40 years, I still have the piano.  I haven't taken lessons since college, but when doing theater, I still use it. :)
