It’s great landing in a movie like and just getting wrapped up in it.

Yes it is, and I'm afraid I don't give myself many chances for it to happen these days. I generally insist on planning and "controlling" my watching as opposed to just giving something the chance to do its thing.

I don't know why, but I started watching a Criterion Eclipse series of Yasujiro Ozu Silent Crime Dramas this week. The first, That Night's Wife, was good but somewhat melodramatic. The second, Walk Cheerfully, was strangely wonderful. It was about a hoodlum who falls in love with a poor woman and decides to go good. Trite plot, but there were so many unexpected scenes that you just got swept up in it. The hoods had their own way of communicating, usually in the form of choreographed movement. But there are also just wonderful shots of feet tapping together that made you wonder what universe you were watching.

I'm looking forward to the last of the series, Dragnet Girl, maybe Saturday.

Lapine was such a weird film director. Impromptu is fun. Life with Mickey has its moments  — and a gorgeous Stephen Schwartz-Alan Menken song — but it’s not wholly successful. Cousin Bette is atrocious.

Isn't Cousin Bette Meets Nana directed by that ass Des McAnuff?

Good Afternoon - Well, it was bound to happen, but a student tested positive for COVID.  So, all the kids in that cohort - plus 4 adults that have had exposure to the student - are quarantined for 2 weeks.  Luckily, distance learning can still happen.  However, that puts me in a classroom to oversee a 6th grade cohort in the afternoon and keeps me at school until 3:30pm or so.  I usually leave around 2:00pm.  Anyway, "All Hands of Deck" is our motto this year, and it's proven to be an important one.  I can go wherever I'm pushed to go, and do so without a word said about it.  We all must help out. 

Vibes you stay well, Matthew. I saw that New York and Kentucky both canceled in-person classes.

I started both The Midnight Library and the new Michael Connelly, The Law of Innocence, today. Both intriguing. i wonder which one I'll finish first.

Library is shorter. But that isn't always a draw.

Work was nonstop again today. I logged on before 8 a.m. and couldn't finish before 5:30. 2.5 hours of that were meetings on the same project, which was basically finished.

Somehow, I managed to make a pot of garbanzo and tomato soup.

[John G.]

I started soaking the garbanzos last night, so they were ready to go.

[John G.]

The soup called for the addition of some pasta. Well, all I had in the house was a box of couscous.

[John G.]

I figured why not use that, so I made up 1 cup, which I folded into the soup. The flavor was wonderful.

[John G.]

I ate a bowl and went back for a little more. Then I discovered by you don't use couscous in a soup.

[John G.]

If you've made the real stuff, you can stir butter into it for two hours and just keep adding more and more butter.

[John G.]

Well, the couscous drank up every last drop of broth in it. I had to add more liquid from the garbanzos, which I thankfully had set aside.

The couscous absorbed half of that, too.

[John G.]

 But it still resembles soup.

[John G.]

And I'm sticking to it.

I ran to the grocery tonight. It's all about Thanksgiving, of course, which means good luck if you want anything else.

For some reason, they had celeriac in tonight. They didn't have that earlier this week. So I grabbed one to try a soup that Jane would hate.

The thing was $6.98 a pound. And each weighs 1.5 pounds. So, it was more than I was expecting.

[John G.]

But It's going into a soup with toasted hazelnuts and cream.

Again, not for Jane.

[John G.]

But it sounds delicious to me.

[John G.]

It'll be the first recipe out of my new soup cookbook that I will try.

[John G.]

But first I have to make potato salad for a socially distanced birthday party.

[John G.]

I'm tired.
