Well, you've read the notes, the notes waltzed and were a dream, and now it is time for you to post until the waltzing cows come home.

Topic of the Day:

John Adams in 1776

He was also in Reds and Oh, God!, both of which I've seen, but don't specifically remember him in them. ::)

Hmmm George. I consider honey vegetarian. I don't know if it is vegan. That might depend on how the bees are cared for.

Eight days to Christmas and thirty-four days to the end of the Trump Clown Show.

But who's counting?

And who's bitter?

We did indeed have quite a snowfall.  It's so quiet outside.

As soon as I raised the window blinds this morning, Annabelle began singing "Winter Wonderland."  She only calmed down when I fed her.  No matter how much the cats run around the apartment in their mittens and mufflers, I won't let them play outside.

BK, as soon as I saw the title of today's posts, I knew you'd been dipping into the Oscar Straus operetta pool. Did you know that Hollywood produced a 1931 film version of A Waltz Dream under the title, The Smiling Lieutenant, with Maurice Chevalier. Claudette Colbert, and Miriam Hopkins?

BK, let me recommend two other Straus operettas I think you would like.

Der Tapfere Soldat/The Gallant Soldier is actually a good adaptation of Shaw's comedy Arms and the Man. It was not a big hit in Germany or Vienna at the time, but it got an English adaptation under the title The Chocolate Soldier and became a success in England and the USA, partly because Shaw insisted it be billed as a parody of his play; he never made a royalty on it because he foolishly refused to be associated with the actual piece.  I grew up with the RCA recording of the English version with Risë Stevens in the dreadful Stanislaus Stange translation from 1909 that gives operetta translation a bad name ("How noble is this hero mine!").  The cast is good, but to make Stevens and Robert Merrill the leads, the music isa lowered to mezzo-baritone ranges, and I think Stevens sounds more like Raina's mother.

Jo Sullivan Loesser and Peter Palmer, who played the secondary couple, would have been perfect in the Stevens-Merrill parts in the original keys.

The Merry Nibelungs: Oscar Straus and Co. do in Wagner's Ring Cycle.  I would love to see it staged.

Beyond the usual tidying up,  I will begin work on Kern's wonderful Oh, Boy!  I really love this score.

Last night I wondered why the delivery man who left the Omaha Steaks carton outside my door did not ring my bell to alter me or have me sign anything.  Well, it turns out the delivery man left it in the lobby and my wonderful neighbors Ann and Jen carried it up and left it at my door.  I learned all of this in an email from Ann this morning.

I may do some laundry this morning before I seriously tackle the bedding.  If I do all the clothes today, I can do the bedding tomorrow.

Do you have any idea how tall a thick full-sized bed comforter is when it's been folded several times?  I'm estimating two feet.  After I removed it from the trunk and set it in my bed and the cats explored it and played in its folds, Annabelle climbed to the top, planted a flag, and declared it her new home.  There she lay until 9:00 lording it over Stella, Thatch, and me, when I removed it from my bed.

I only saw William Daniels live once, and that was his Tony-nominated performance in 1776, August 1969.  While I was working at Barnes & Noble between 1998 and 2004, I got the chance to meet him and tell him how wonderful that performance was.  I have been a fan ever since that performance.

TOD:

I enjoy Daniels in almost anything except Knight Rider, if that was the shows title.

I would have loved to see him in A Little Night Music with Glynis Johns.

I forgot! I did see Daniels again on my second visit to A Little Night Music.  I saw the original cast in September 1973 and Daniels replacing :en Cariou in March 1974.  Sadly, Johns was out and we saw Barbara Lang, a beautiful actress, but she wasn't as good as Johns in the role.

William Daniels was as good, if not better, as Len Cariou. I think he brought out more of Egerman's neurotic edge.

Laundry is in the washers. While I was wrestling my walker, two loads of laundry, and the laundry supplies inyo the hall, Stella made her escape. I closed the foor and ignored her while I fetched my mailbox keys. When I opened the door to head to the basement, she thankfully ran back into the apartment.

I can't get Barbara Cook out of my head, for some reason. She is singing "No More Candy, My Dear" over and over.

I'm not complaining.

I remember hearing the title, but I never saw Ladybug, Ladybug. Always happy to discover another Frank Perry film.
