I've been listening to John McGlinn's Show Boat most of the morning. It just tears out my heart.

I got some of the housecleaning finished, but not all. It's hard when you cannot stand alone to be on a ladder trying to wash down louvered doors

And a quick trip to the supermarket. The market was overcrowded.

Now watching The Day of the Locust. The beginning is really good.

I read the book three or four times in high school and saw the movie more than 10 years ago. I don't remember enough of it, though, which is all good. Everything will be new to me.

So, Mom went to a Fourth of July party at the assisted living center where she'll be moving. She was talking with someone and instead of say that Dad was a big photographer, she said he was a big pornographer.

Duly noted.

Day of the Locust was more disturbing than I remembered. Maybe because the parallels to today are a little too close for comfort. The almost extraordinary, all-consuming need for celebrity in all areas of our lives, including religion (Geraldine Page as a huckster evangelist was scary good). Karen Black is perfect as a beauty who isn't quite beautiful enough. I don't like her in most things, but here she was ideally cast.

I couldn't watch the cockfighting scene.

If there's one thing thought I have as to what keeps this from being a great movie, it's the director, John Schlesinger, who overindulges in his bag of tricks, things that he's used in too many other movies to better effect. He doesn't seem to trust his story wholly. He tries to make it better. And he doesn't.

I have moved on to a Guy Maddin film called keyhole. Pardon the pun, but it's maddening. As are most of his movies. Why I talk myself into watching another one, I don't know.

They're better than Hal Hartley and Henry Jaglom movies.

It's been three weeks now since my big back (technically neck and shoulders) flare-up and, although somewhat better, I don't feel stable yet. Today is better, but I sure don't feel like pushing it.

I've been watching a lot of YouTube stretch videos. I stretch every morning for an hour, but it's just not enough. I found a PT in the UK named Jasper, who has some stretches that actually target my most troublesome areas. Thank you, Jasper, my new friend. Most of the PTs I've been to use a one-size-fits-all approach and simply haven't helped me.
