Day of the Locust was more disturbing than I remembered. Maybe because the parallels to today are a little too close for comfort. The almost extraordinary, all-consuming need for celebrity in all areas of our lives, including religion (Geraldine Page as a huckster evangelist was scary good). Karen Black is perfect as a beauty who isn't quite beautiful enough. I don't like her in most things, but here she was ideally cast.
I couldn't watch the cockfighting scene.
If there's one thing thought I have as to what keeps this from being a great movie, it's the director, John Schlesinger, who overindulges in his bag of tricks, things that he's used in too many other movies to better effect. He doesn't seem to trust his story wholly. He tries to make it better. And he doesn't.
