At Easter time, I like marshmallow Peeps, but I like them when they are stale after sitting out of their packaging in the Easter basket for a few days.

Me too!  *And do you put them in the microwave too and watch them "inflate"?

Speaking of marshmallows, I happened to catch a segment of an old Marth Stewart show yesterday in which she made a bizarre variation of Rice Krispie marshmallow treats.  Along with starting out with a marshmallow base that included something like a pound of melted butter, she used six cups each of Rice Krispies, Cap'N'Crunch and Fruit Loops.  She then managed to jam this massive amount of mixture into a 9" x 9" x 2" pan, which, once set, was sliced into these huge 3" x 3" squares.  I couldn't imagine taking more than a few bites of these things before getting sick of them.  They are the fruitcake of marshmallow treats.

They're actually quite good.  And very rich.  I was amazed the first time I saw that segment too - There's no way she can cram all that stuff into that pan?!?!?  But...

When I made them, I used a slightly larger pan - I just didn't want them that thick/high.  They were very good, but unlike traditional Rice Krispie Treats, they're definitely meant to be eaten one a time, rather than a couple in one sitting.  Martha Stewart Living also had some other variations published in its pages.  The cover of that issue had a tower of the various "treats" on it.  What was interesting - and tasty - were corn-syrup rather than marshmallow based.

Hi! Been E & T all weekend doing the mommy thing.  I haven't caught up on the posts although I have read the Notes.  I did not see mention of DR elmore attending the Firday night gala at Joe Allens's did he not attend, was he ill?

I'm going to try to skim through to see if all is well.....

DRvixmom, it was Saturday night, dear!  Yes, I did attend, and I had a lovely time in excellent company.

Hmmm? Hmmm? Maybe a little cholesterol from the fish stays behind.

I had the fried Mars bar from that very same Chip Shop and it is quite good indeed. Although the Mars Bar to the Brits is what we'd call a Milky Way, I believe.

Well, if the oil is at the right temperature, and the batter is properly applied, then the any "fishiness" in the oil should be minimal.

As for the Mars Bars...  You are correct, DR Rodzinski!  But you do have the option of selecting the British (no nuts) or the American (with nuts) at the Chip Shop.  *And they serve their Fried Twinkies with a raspberry coulis - a perfect complement to the "goo".

I was actually a little disappointed to find that A Salt & Battery in the Lower East Side does not do the fried candy bars.  However, in it's place, they do this deep-fried, chocolate and banana sandwich topped with ice cream and more chocolate sauce.

As for the new ending for Pippin...

I think I've recounted this here before... Well, at least on the "old" board... In any case...

From what I understand, a director in London tried this out a few years ago, and Mr. Schwartz liked it.  I believe it was incorporated into the Papermill Playhouse production a few years ago, but I'm not sure.  However, I did hear about this "option" directly from Mr. Schwartz's assistant, so...

Basically, the whole cast is treated like one big ensemble, a troupe of actors.  As the Leading Player "directs" the show, he starts picking out various people of the ensemble to play their parts - Charlemagne, Fastrada, Louis, Catherine, etc.  At the "end" of the show, the "Magic To Do" vamp starts back up again.  Pippin, Catherine and the Boy (which was played by an adult too), take their places back in line.   Then the Leading Player starts looking through the line for another candidate...  He picks a new "Pippin"... and the cycle starts all over again...

Fade to black...

Or something like that.

Hmmm.... Potato Sticks (or Stix)!

Ever get one of those Cuban and/or Puerto Rican steak sandwiches where they put those on/in the sandwich?  When I was in Houston, the menu said the sandwich came with a bed of "fried potatoes".  And when the platter came to my table, the fried potatoes were Potato Sticks - which are fried potatoes.  I was thinking I was going to get french fries...  In any case, it was quite a good sandwich, and those potato sticks added a great crunch to the sandwich.  *They also act as the salt for the sandwich too.  **And, yes, I did research this after I had that first sandwich.

That's sort of new too.  *Although, "but happy" has been in every production of the show I've ever done.  So...  

Like I sort of mentioned, this "new ending" basically depends on the conceit/concept of treating everyone on stage as pawns in the Leading Player's game.  When I first heard about it, it didn't sit too well with me, but the more I thought about it, the more I liked it.  It really adds heightens the sinister edge or the show.

Oooh, no!  I never did that but now I can't wait till Halloween or whenever the next Peeps come out (do they do 4th of July Peeps?)  I can see smushing a nuked Peep between two graham crackers!

LOL!  I was thinking of offsetting the recipe the opposite way--using the same size pan but halving the ingredients.  They do sound delicious but just too dense.  I like my marshmallow treats on the airy side.

I'm sitting here grading finals and listening to the Broadway Radio Show, which is a break with tradition.  I usually put on Bernard Herman's score to Psycho when grading finals.  Puts me in the proper mood.

And now to a problem with the Radio Show.  It played through to "Bye Bye Blackbird", and then it went to Donald's commentary on My Favorite Musicals of the 60's, with him saying we had just heard Barbra Streisand and Sidney Chaplin.  Anyone else have that problem?

Anyone ever have a candy bar called BUN? A friend of mine and I laugh at it, because it is such a bad name for a candybar. I think you can still get them from vintage candy stores. It used to be made by Leaf.

Then there is a bar now called MARATHON by Snickers, but when I was a young-timer,  MARATHON bars were entirely different. They were a foot-long braid of caramel (there was a ruler printed on the packaging) covered in chocolate.

Then there is a bar now called MARATHON by Snickers, but when I was a young-timer,  MARATHON bars were entirely different. They were a foot-long braid of caramel (there was a ruler printed on the packaging) covered in chocolate.

 I have never heard of a BUN candybar, not a Leaf candy manufacturer but I do remember  the Marathon Bars although I cannot remember ever eating one.

I was fond of "black cows" a caramel lollipop covered in chocolate

Hmmm... Yes, Flake bars... Regular (milk), Dark and Snow (I think that's what they call their white chocolate variation).   And isn't there one where the White Chocolate Flake is enrobed in Milk Chocolate?

*I remember when I Australia - the McDonald's would let you choose Flake as a mix-in for their soft-serve.

I like my Leading Player on the sinister side, too.  Not as blatant as Booth in Assassins, but there has to be a dark side, and a seductive one at that.

I wonder if younger audiences today are as effected by the finale of Pippin as those who were around in the 70's.  Acts of self-immolation occurred and were reported on much more frequently at the time, and I'm sure this had some kind of resonance with the audiences then.  I imagine that young people today would wonder why Pippin would even consider such an act of self-expression.

Ah, yes, BUN!  Regular with Peanuts, then there's one with pecans, and then the Maple flavor.

I had a couple of them while I was in Indianapolis in fact!

ELKHART, Ind. - A crane vending machine can be frustrating enough when you’re trying to snatch a little stuffed toy from its steely clutches. Imagine if the prize it’s denying you is your own 3-year-old son.
 
James Manges II managed to climb up the chute and inside one of the machines Thursday, swinging around for an hour amid the plush toys he coveted before firefighters freed him.

James’ mother, Danielle Manges, said they had paid an early morning visit to a Wal-Mart in this northern Indiana city because he had been sick and was sleeping odd hours. After she denied him money to play the vending-machine game, he threw a juice box and climbed into the machine while his mother picked it up.

“Within two seconds he had climbed through the hole, into the chute and pushed the door shut so we couldn’t get him out,” she said.

At first, Manges thought it was funny: “He was playing with all the toys and hanging from the bar like a monkey.”

She even bought a disposable camera to take pictures, as other shoppers did. But she soon became upset when Wal-Mart employees said they did not have a key to let James out.

Firefighters removed the back of the machine to free James — who went home empty-handed.

“He definitely didn’t get a toy after that,” Manges said.

Did any of you Indian based DR's hear about this?
