Well, you've read the notes, the notes were irritated, and now it is time for you to post until the irritated cows come home.

And where has SHE been? I don't think she's made a single appearance here during the entire pandemic?

Today, I'll probably go back to my sister's and niece's to lose a game of Scrabble with them because my mom is coming over to win a game of Scrabble.  That's her game.  She, who never went to school past 9th grade (in Germany) and had to learn English, is the Scrabble champion of the family. ;D

And after that (or I'll leave the game early, if I need to), my friend Margo and I are going to the movies.  We're going to see Free Guy, starring Ryan Reynolds.  We'll probably go out to eat after the movie.

The Amazon search algorithms are so weird sometimes.

I searched on Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, but got The Muppet Show Swedish Chef Plush Toy.

According to Amazon, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco wrote an operatic adaptation of The Importance of Being Earnest.

I slept a little later than usual this morning, but it was a bad night. Perhaps it was the news of Peter's death, but I was restless and awake too often.

My neighbors Ann and Jen were out running errands and stopped at an Italian bakery. Last night Ann brought me a fresh napoleon from the bakery, God, it was good, but I had a very hard time eating it because a shameless pair of cats, Annabelle and Stella, climbed all over me to get to it. When I finished it, I let them lick the cream and pastry from the plastic container, then we watched Midsomer Murders and went to bed.

BK, I think you'll like Tannhauser, but if you get a recording, get the "Paris version." For the Paris opera, Wagner was required to write a ballet, so he revised the opening sequence and added the wonderful, erotic Bacchanale or "Venusberg Music," and beefed up the role of the goddess Venus as a foil to the chaste heroine Elisabeth. Both the original version and the Paris version have been recorded, and I prefer the revised edition, so you need to check the recordnigs carefully.

I stood through two acts of the last Met production, but my legs wouldn't hold out for the third act, but the score is wonderful.

I like Domingo, so I own this one, but you can see the Paris version under the title on the back cover.

The Yale School of Music's quarterly journal arrived in the mail yesterday. This photo graced the back cover.

The caption reads: "Special guests Handsome Dan and Heidi the service dog joined us in Morse Recital Hall prior to the 2021 Commencement."

Yes, that is a Steinway. And Handsome Dan is the Yale bulldog mascot.

Yes to the Paris version of Tannhäuser!

I didn't see it at the Met, but I have their video from the 1980s (?). I had first seen it in concert at the Cincinnati May Festival in 1975. That was my introduction to the Paris version, and that music was fantastic. Amusingly, it was also my first exposure to Kathleen Battle, a young newcomer who sang the shepherd with great charm.  :)

Followup to yesterday's TOD:

As reported, I took out Lost in America and set it on top of the watch pile. When I went in later to get started on it, I did something I rarely do:  I watched all of the supplemental interviews before even glancing at the movie, in order to better familiarize myself with Albert Brooks the filmmaker. (And these are totally worthwhile. Prime Criterion quality.)

All these years, I've really only known him by his role in Broadcast News. Running my eye down his acting credits, I'm stunned to be reminded of his appearance in the Twilight Zone movie. There are a few other big name films, but when it comes to voicing things (as in Finding Nemo), I really don't count that, because I often fail to recognize people's voices in those things anyway. Checking his directing credits, I haven't seen a damned one of those films. So, for years, Broadcast News has more or less defined Albert Brooks for me. Which is fortuitous, because even though he didn't write or direct that, it very much captures what he is all about.

So finally I started Lost in America, and due to other things going on at the time, I only got about 25 minutes in, but it's excellent and very much of a type of film I really like, and I shall finish it later today.
