I didn't go to see any of the Mission: Impossible films until the fourth, Ghost Protocol, which received such accolades for a couple of its sequences that I thought, why not? And in the theater I thought they were pretty breathtaking. I don't actually recall any of the plot now, and I knew then that there were references that I wasn't picking up because I hadn't seen the first three films.

Some months later I thought I'd catch up and I watched the first one. I literally don't remember any of it now. I do remember it was a little hard to get interested in. I've never yet moved on to #2 and #3. By all rights, such movies ought to be good escapist fun, if nothing else. So why are these such a chore, I wonder.

My thoughts after seeing the first. It worked too hard at showing you how hard it was working.

TOD

When I was ten, Gershwin had just become the most important composer in my life, thanks to the triple threat of the
Porgy and Bess film and the Concerto in F and Rhapsody in Blue on the Mercury recordings. The other symphonic works would follow. All of these continue to lead the way for me, with Porgy still the desert island choice, as it pretty much has always been.

One of my favorite possessions is the massive photocopy of the full score that DR Elmore gifted me with back in the Toyland days. A masterpiece and treasured artifact.

Which, by the bye, leads us to:

Thank you, all, for the good wishes. I suspect before I die that I will have more days as dreadful as yesterday, but I never expected one so soon.

Congrats to DR TCB on his millstone.

Yes, congrats, sir. I'm so terrible at checking these numbers, but I just looked at mine and I'll have a round one coming up in not too long a time. It's a modest one in comparison with everyone else's, of course, but what can you do. Well, if I suddenly found I had a few tens of thousands of posts in me that I could knock out in short order, I guess that's something I could do.

I've always loved Gershwin's beautiful and moving "Isn't It a Pity?," which I first heard on a Mabel Mercer recording. Imagine my surprise when I discovered years later that it was a comedy song like "I'll Tell the Man in the Street!"

It's been a fairly challenging winter, as those things go. At times, I have felt myself surrounded by ice holes.

Can’t narrow the Gershwin list down to single songs. So many pleasures.

Ditto!   :)

Ditto, too!

Thanks.  While excellent, it is a slow hard read.  I wish I was going to the gym this morning as I need the hour of reading on the treadmill.

One of my co-workers, who didn’t believe in tipping in restaurants, would take a plastic baggie with her and would fill it with fried chicken from the buffet.  I made sure I never sat close to her.

I too would want to stay far away from her, and add an extra tip before leaving.

We will finish the last two episodes of REACHER tonight.  It is a treat to not have little Tom Cruise playing big Reacher.  Now Keith understands why I groaned and protested our watching the two Cruise films.

We are happy the series has been renewed for another season.

He is built.

LOL, a bit too much for my taste, and even Reacher who didn't work out.  That's ok, it makes up for the actor being 3 inches too short.  What the heck, 6'2'' vs 6'3" isn't a big deal when everything else works.

You’re right. It is slow and occasionally heavy. I took my time getting through it. I read something else at the same time.
