Last night I watched Richard Lester's first half of Dumas' The Three Musketeers, which I haven't seen since 1974. I had forgotten that the film had cut D'Artagnan's trickery to get into Lady DeWinter's bed, which prompts her revenge. I remember loving the film in 1974, but it seemed long to me and I thought some of the many duels could have been trimmed, but I suspect it was filling to make the first half of the original film seem full-length.

It's definitely a swash-buckler, and the international cast leaves accents all overb the place, but I'd forgotten that Christopher Lee and Charlton Heston were in it, and I'd be curious to know if al of Raquel Welch's clumsiness was in the original script or if it was Lester's joke - like the pratfall at the end - on her. I loved the design, which sometimes reminded me of Robin and Marian, and the slapstyick and odd turns of humor still make me laugh.

DR George, I love Judy Collins, and I credit her for a lot of my liberal politics. I am so jealous you got to see her last night. I saw her in concert at Miami University around 1971, juast before her album "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" was released. She had a piano, bass, drums, and two guitarists accompanying her. She only played piano once, to accompany herself on "My Father," which still breaks my heart.

When I worked at Barnes & Noble, 1998-2005, I used to see her often in the store. I'm happy I had the chance to thank her for being a big influence on my life.

It’s a short morning for me, this being a two-show day. Last night’s opening went well. I’ll be interested to see how the next few audiences like it. I had wondered how such a classic early sixties show complete with secretary chasing would be addressed by today’s college kids and their audiences. Well, they’ve been having a great time with it, with not one word changed and no cuts or omissions or “updating” of any kind. You never know.

I had an okay night with a solid but way too short sleep. And now thanks to DR Elmore not providing a trigger warning, I can’t get our very own “Coffee Break” out of my head.

Well, I’m in for a day of it, and I am on my second cup of coffee in a ceramic mug as we speak. Expect more to follow.

I like the 30's Warner Bros. musicals because the songs are so great...and the comedy players really get a chance to show off....and Busby.

SEVEN BRIDES..... for the great choreography. PAJAMA GAME for the songs and Doris Day.....ST LOUIS for Judy & Co......

WEST SIDE STORY for all the reasons MR BK has in the notes. I too don't mind Richard Beymer. I had seen him in a movie or two and thought he was fun and handsome.

Although it's horse racing - I hate that AMERICA took to the streets in the new version.....and Anita's scene in the store with the Jets was so low key.....she didn't have the hate and disgust that Rita Moreno had in the original version....I was waiting for it - but it never showed up.

Sadly, they have no orchestra space of any kind there, so we're in a separate room, and the video monitor is behind the players. We have to sneak a quick look behind us whenever possible, and I've managed to catch a few glimpses so far, but only a few. (I never stop playing in this thing.) I've only seen a few seconds of "Yo Ho Ho", which is lit atmospherically and the dancers and costumes look good, but I'll try to catch more. I have no idea whether they're copying any Fosse moments such as in "Secretary" or "Brotherhood", etc.

At least we're being miked and piped into the theater by an Emmy-winning sound guy who does all the shows at the college. Mark (or Marc) Weglinksi, a.k.a. "Wedge".

(I know he won it for the Jesus Christ Superstar telecast, and maybe more because he's handled - I think - all the NBC musicals.)
