SERENADE TO ME
« on: March 07, 2022, 12:55:27 AM »

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a serenade to me, and now it is time for you to post until the serenading cows come home.

I am not familiar with the orchestral version, but have heard all the vocal versions, and performed it once.

I'm pretty sure I've told this story before, but one of the soprano soloists got nervous just before her big solo, and instead of declaiming Shakespeare's lovely "Peace, Ho!," she instead sang "Heave, Ho!."

Vaughan Williams really did capture the text in this music. Masterful.

I'll have to think about the TOD.

One piece that helps settle me (though not orchestral, but chamber), is Arvo Pärt's Spiegel im Spiegel (Mirror in Mirror):

This recording project is causing a lot of tsuris, and I will be spending more time on it today than I desire. The Big Telephonic Conversation did not happen yesterday; we played phone tag, so that will occur today. I look forward to it.

DR George, I would call the performance yesterday "The Director's Nightmare." How did your director cope?

Kitty cleanup is over, and I've accomplished a little business. I've also been thinking about the TOD, and I can only think of two orchestral pieces:
Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis
Pachelbel's Canon

I think I would like to see a play where somebody gets hit on the head and we hear a doorbell.

DR singdaw you don't have to think about this, but I used Spiegel um Spiegal to underscore the penultimate scene in THE BAD SEED.

The mother is giving her bad seed daughter an overdose of sleeping pills, reading her a page of The Five Little Peppers, puts her to bed, and then shoots herself......it was most effective.

And not a doorbell to be heard!

I like the movie SERENADE with Mario Lanza, Joan Fontaine, Vincent Price, and Vince Edwards......

The book by James Cain is even more interesting since the leading character has an affair with a bullfighter while he is Mexico.

Although it's not particularly restful in spots.....I like to listen to Carmina Burana.

But for me nothing beats Bolero.

So what you are telling us is that S.P. Eagle, aka Sam Spiegel, was really "Sam Mirror"?

My go-to serenade is Elgar's "Enigma Variations" conducted by Sir John Barbirolli.
