In October 2017, my friend Martin Yates asked me to write a holiday overture for the Christmas concerts of his company, West End International. I bugged him to get a sound system recording of the piece, but he told me the sound men and union wouldn't allow it. In 2018, he surprised me with a recording he or his wife Alison made on their cell phone. Several cuts were made, mostly by cutting the second A sections of "It's the Most Wonderful Time" and "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm," but there are a couple - the intro to "Mary's Boy Child" and a snippet of the fugue - I'd like to see restored. I wish there were a better recording, but I think this will do for now.So, here's Martin's edit of my overture, conducted by Michael England with the Royal Northern Sinfonia.
