I'm "assuming" steak sandwiches are still a thing, but I'll bet they aren't quite the thing they were in the mid-late 20th century.

I had a great one on an early-1970s trip to NYC, at the famous Brasserie just off Park Avenue. That was a wonderful place, and I treasure my couple of memories of it. When I moved here in 1989, I went to see if it was still there, and -- if I'm not mixing up the memories -- it was, then, and I had a meal there, but it didn't seem quite the same. I remember that when it finally closed, there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

You’re right, ChasSmith. Steak sandwiches aren’t what they used to be.

Yes, fried seafood is a fine thing, DR John G., but especially as a treat in places like Coney Island and other northeastern beach towns and amusement areas along the New Jersey or New England coasts.

Just checked back -- BK also mentioned Costco fish sticks. Maybe that's what I should try, because a lot of their brands (Kirkland or whatever) of various and sundry things are of better quality than the brands at the supermarkets. And there will certainly be a price benefit.

Tonight we are doing our zoom thing (actually, I'm not sure Kristi uses zoom for these, might be something else) with the small group of friends who have been the usual suspects at our New Year's Eve gatherings over the past ten years or more. It went to being online with the pandemic in 2020, we kept it that way last year, and we decided to do it once more this time. For one thing, the new outbreaks are just ridiculous this season, and for another, we simply aren't ready, energy wise, to host anything at the house. Maybe next year we'll get that energy back, and feel better about doing it.

Anyhoo, I'll be checking in here off and on as well.

Watching a powerful 1930 movie called David Golder. It’s a French film from France about a businessman in poor health. His despicable family want to bleed him dry. For an early talkie the sound is excellent, including a beach scene that predates From Here to Eternity.

I finally remembered to look up chicken fricassee. Yes, I'd enjoying trying that. Might have had it as a kid, but I don't remember.

Here's another:

Is Waldorf salad still a thing? It was a common thing when I was a young kid, we'd even have it at home, but I don't know when I last saw or heard of it anywhere.

I haven't seen Waldorf salad on menus in a long while. It used to be ubiquitous.

Still not fun but I am glad you are almost normal.

I have never had a lamb chop.

Wow.  I ate them all the time growing up.  I much preferred them to steak.
