DR Tom, wow that sounds like a lot of train travelling!  Especially from Vancouver to Toronto. That is very far.  Re: going from NYC to Montreal, I know they have trains, but i have never heard of anybody go from one to the other by train (usually car or bus, since it only takes 6 hours).  I think I once looked into going by train, but it took much longer with many stops.

Anyhow, good luck with your trip.

DR Matt H:  THere is generally always something different between film and stage versions of a musical, but I think "The Music Man" is right up there as among the most faithful.

As for "1776", there simply isn't any logical reason for them to have cut the "Cool, Cool Considerate Men" number from the final theatrical cut.  It's one of the highlights of the score...and now that it's back on the DVD, the film seems enough, finally.  I grant you, there are some nice touches on the LD made up from things left on the cutting room floor -- and there are those out there who believe every single shot made ought to be included.

I'm content with the DVD.

I keep "meaning" to see "Return of the Sith" and "Batman Begins"...but both keep getting postponed, too.

I am rather perplexed at my decision to see "The War of the Worlds" when both those other films were playing at the same multiplex.  

I guess it was the "newness" of it...and some of the positive reviews I'd seen.

There is only one reason to watch this, aside from the credits being hand painted on plywood rabbits, and that is the cute girl who plays Arch's love interest. I find her adorable.

My traditional method of "Don't touch the pile on the desk; I can find anything I want." is not as effective as it used to be.   I don't know if it''s because the pile is bigger; I have less of a brain, or if the world is just more complicated, but I don't have the handle on it I used to have.

I can relate to that!!  I think part of my problem is I can to keep cleaning up my mess as it bothers Keith, so nothing really stays the same.

I have to agree with you there, DR Rodzinski...she is a real cutie! I haven't looked her up on the IMDB yet to see if this movie stopped her budding career in it's tracks...but I suspect it didn't help it any.

The first half of the movie seems to have very little Arch Hall Jr. in it....much to my disappointment, as I am beginning to find that I really do like Arch Hall Jr. as a performer.

I still need to watch his western...DEADWOOD '67 and THE CHOPPERS. Then I will have seen 'em all.

Not that there is anyone to answer the question or comment, but we thinking about using Amtrak next year in the USA. Maybe a pass so that we can travel from LA  to SF and eventually to Seatle. From Seattle to Vancouver and across to Toronto to New York. We figure we can make good use of the 30 day pass available to non North American residents.
any comment and thoughts on the proposal would be appreciated - particularly the stopping off points.

When next year?  We just made tentative plans to travel with friends.  

We have considered taking the train but the station just isn’t convenient for us.  Unless the time schedule has changed the Northbound train ride through the most beautiful portions of California is at night and completely misses views of Mt. Shasta.  

I looked at the time schedule from SF, leaving at 9PM, arriving in Klamath Falls at
8:15 AM.  Then there is a bus to Ashland, which I can’t believe takes over 2 hours as listed.  If you come to Ashland we will pick you up at the train station.  The road in the morning should be pretty where at night it can be a bit scary.

From Klamath Falls the train leaves at 8:25, arriving in Portland at 3:40PM.  That should be a beautiful ride.  The Portland train station is near the Pearl District, the wonderful area where Bryan lives.

Thank you Rodzinski. I think, however, that I have THE CHOPPERS on one of those discs with 3 or 4 movies crammed onto it....am gonna find it and watch it, some day very soon.

It would be fun to see Arch Hall and the Archers perform sometime...I would actually get a kick out of meeting the guy.

PS: The entire long version (almost twice as long) of Arch's interview is going to be in Tom Weaver's (the author who did the interview) next book. I am going to ask my library to get it.

Ben, hmm….. my mother was notoriously late and I try very hard to be punctual.  She was the most organized person I have known, even more than Keith.  I on the other hand am the opposite.  I wish I were organized.

Ron, Keith was disappointed in WAR OF THE WORLDS and preferred the original.  Not expecting much I enjoyed it.  Tom Cruise did a fine job but it is little Dakota Fanning who made the movie for us.  

A real disappointment, and we weren’t expecting much, was THE FANTASTIC FOUR.

The movie that didn’t disappoint me and left Keith pleasantly surprised is BATMAN BEGINS.

I am also a Virgo (DR JOSE and I share an August 26 natal day) - so just read his posts, DR RLP's post, and DR BEN's post.  I do all of these things as well.  Alphabetical, by type and author, EVERYTHING.  The computer is a great boon to keeping addresses, dates, and PEOPLE organized.

I also have a dry erase board that I write Things To Do in the appropriate square.

Good Afternoon!

I'm back from lunch, the post office, the bank and my storage unit.  I went ahead and re-organized some of the boxes in my storage unit, as well putting a couple of them in my car to take back up to Fairfax tonight.

After checking out most of the contents of the various boxes-o-stuff, my level of "anxiety" over just how much stuff I have/want/need to go through has lessened greatly.  I also just realized that there was nothing I must attend to over the next couple of days.  Yes, I still want to go through the boxes and purge and organize things, but I don't have to get that all done before heading up to NYC on Friday.  Yes, it would have been nice to get that stuff all done, but there's also no harm in letting that stuff sit for a few more weeks, if not months.

-And since I won't be moving all my stuff out of storage and up to NYC until later, well...

So, I'm back at Steve's, and I've brought three boxes-o-stuff up with me.  I should be able to go through those boxes before heading back up to Fairfax tonight.

As they say in The Full Monty... LET IT GO!
