I could eat a gaggle of Reese's Pieces right now.

Lunch time seems to be light years from now instead of just under an hour.

I don't get lunch for another hour and a half!! I'm dying!! But guess what? I have three boiled potatoes (golf-ball sized) and a gaggle of peas to go with my turkey sandwich, so I'm happy. :)

William Westmoreland has died.  While he is not thought of very highly (especially by people in my generation and those older--those younger probably don't even know who he was), he was a very good friend and colleague of my father's, and I will always be appreciative of the fact that he and his wife Katherine ("Kitzi," believe it or don't) took a special trip to SLC to personally present my father the Military Citizen of the Year Award sometime in the late 80s or early 90s.

Actually, now that I think about it, it probably was the early 80s, because he had just instigated his lawsuit against Mike Wallace and 60 Minutes.  The dinner discussion that evening at my parents' house was about nothing other than the "smear job" CBS had supposedly done on him.  (He did most of the talking--we did a lot of listening. ;) ).

I loathe the over-usage of cell phones in public areas, and I despise the cell phone companies for promoting their usage in every situation..   That's why God invented pay phones.  I will never (I hope) have one either, DRBen.

LOL and when I'm in NY I will be very grateful for my cell phone. :)

Geetings all.  Sorry to have been E&T lately, but with taking Mondays off during the summer (the joys of all those nights I am here until 11pm during the school year!), plus the fact that a storm knocked out our ISP at home for the better part of yesterday....well, you can understand.

The bedroom, which we are redecorating, is coming along nicely.  painting is finished.  Curtains have been cleaned and rehung.  Waiting to hear if a friend will build us the built-in window seat and cornices we asked him to do for us.  Furniture has finally been bought.

Happy birthday, and continued recovery vibes to DR OzDerek.

Favorite potato dish?  Latkes, certainly.  A good french fry.  A good baked potato (i.e.: with crispy skin), with butter and salt.  Never cared for mashed.  If I think of anything else, I will let you know.

Kitsy (nee Van Deusen).

Westmoreland was a South Carolina native and ran, unsuccessfully, for Governor of SC in 1974.  He and Kitsy have three children.

Did anyone else get kidded, as a child, about having to eat "toe Jam" on your morning toast if you didn't take a bath the night before?

Ah, memories....

I don't think anyone has mentioned that Geraldine Fitzgerald has passed on at ninety-one.  I worked with her on the TV version of Forget-Me-Not Lane, and I absolutely adored her - we really bonded when we filmed the show, and she was gracious and kind and completely lovely.

BK, the taters that come with Musso & Frank's pounded steak are Lyonesse Potatoes and are quite yummy when slathered in the gravy that comes with the steak.  Apparently the Irish Hollywood contingent that included Spencer Tracy, Pat O'Brien, Jimmy Cagney, Lynne Overman and others used to refer to them as "Lynnie's Potatoes" in honour of Mr. Overman who apparently quite liked them (whether this was at Musso & Frank's or not, I can't remember.  I can't remember where I heard this story...either Garson Kanin or Jim Bacon talks about it in one of their books).

Yes, DR CP - the potato story was in Mr Garson Kanin's book - one of them about Hollywood in which he spilled the beans officially on the Hepburn-Tracy affair.

No actually I guess it was his book titled HOLLYWOOD - after a bit of internet surfing.

Baked with sour cream, hash browns with a bit of ketchup and tabasco, garlic mashed, non-garlic mashed, home fries, not-too-thin French fries, most any style with a thick mushroom gravy, baked wedges covered with cheese, thin-sliced and fried or baked with some loverly herbs, or in a not-overly-mayonaissed salad.  Loves me some potatoey goodness!

I mentioned it in a post yesterday, and I believe MattH mentioned it today...hmmm...I am thinking a certain host doesn't read our posts  ::)

...particularly since he has yet to answer Jrand54/my question on what the thought of the Ghost Cat movie.

I'm not sold on the syrup idea, but I gotta say that mayo on fries ain't all that bad.

Repeating my request from yesterday:  could some kind NYC H/K try to find yesterday's (July 18) New York Sun and tell me if the review of "St. Frances of Hollywood" mentions my web article "Shedding Light on Shadowland."  If you can get the paper in any case and scan the review for me (even if it doesn't mention my article), I'll repay you for the paper.  Thank you.

I went to the website www.nysun.com and they have a link to the article HERE.  You have to register but it says that you can get a trial of two weeks for free...I didn't go past that, but I would assume that you can cancel the subscription before your credit card is actually charged, although I don't know for sure.  You could try it, unless you actually wanted the paper copy.

It took me a long time to get used to the idea of malt vinegar on french fries, but once I did--yum!
