Being pretty young, I learned mostly through news coverage, such as it was. And Donahue, things like that. I do remember during my teenage summer job, building swimming pools, we stopped at one nice house in Atlanta where my boss opened up a guy's pool each year when the weather warmed up. I think my boss was aware the guy had AIDS, and while I was doing some work outside, he went in to settle up payment, and when he came out and it was time to go, he said, sadly, "I don't think we'll be back here next year. This guy does not have long." That made it real.
