I'm on episode three of this vile remake of Dead Ringers, truly one of the most horribly bad, misguided, and disgusting things I've ever seen. I'm sure they're all patting themselves on the back for their brilliance. You want brilliance, watch the David Cronenberg movie. This is like a bunch of high school girls got together and said let's see how gross we can be - every other word is the eff word, so that it literally has no purpose, and for all of the close-ups of vaginas and birth and c-sections, and forceps and embryos, it's not one-tenth as creepy as the original. The first problem is, of course, the gender switch. Jeremy Irons as twin gynocologists is creepy because - they're MEN. Women isn't on that level, I'm afraid, but they make one of them a Lesbian - ooh, how cutting edge. All the endless padding and additions are ludicrous. The woman who "created" this for television, one Alice Birch, a Brit playwright and TV and film writer, is on my "NEVER WATCH ANYTHING BY THIS PERSON" list, right at the very top. The dialogue is horrible, well, everything is horrible, including the direction. I don't think anyone has ever accused David Cronenberg of being subtle, but his Dead Ringers is so effective because he's a brilliant director and writer and he knows when and where to shock - it's not arbitrary like the remake, which is, as I said at the top, vile Everyone loves Rachel Weisz - I've enjoyed a couple of her performances, but I hate her in this. Part of it is the writing, of course, but her choices are just so actorish, especially the obnoxious and noisy way she eats as Elliot - that was almost enough for me to turn it off. I'll stick it out because I want to see just how low and sickening these amateurs can go.
