Maurice de Pakh, Herbert Spencer, and Max Steiner all began as Broadway orchestrators. Max Steiner wrote with Russell Bennett some of the glorious orchestrations for Jerome Kern's beautiful Sitting Pretty, which he also conducted, Gershwin's Lady Be Good, and the Gershwin-Romberg Rosalie. I think he may have worked on Kern's Sweet Adeline as well.

Monday morning greetings!  For the next week I’ll be busy with my 3 women’s organizations wrapping up their program years.  Today:  catered luncheon for 30.

Broadway (1900-1940):
Otto Langey and Harold Sanford, who orchestrated a lot of Victor Herbert's shows.
Robert Russell Bennett aka Russell Bennett, who remained Chappell's prize orchestrator through the 1960s
Emil Gerstenberger, who taught Richard Rodgers to conduct on Dearest Enemy, did the big Romberg shows of the 1920s: The Student Prince, The Desert Song, and The New Moon
Hans Spialek
Frank Saddler, who was Kern's orchestrator of choice until his death around 1921, who wrote for bif Broadway shows as well as smaller, quirky orchestrations for the Kern Princess Theatre shows

BK, thank you for letting me play the wallflower on last night’s Zoom.  I was hesitant even to attend because I had not yet watched the series.  Well, I have now and I loved it!

Broadway (1940-1970)
Robert Russell Bennett: my friend Russell Warner said that Bennett's orchestrations were like a velvet-lined jewel box in which the tune sat like a diamond ring
Phil Lang: Annie Get Your Gun, High Button Shoes, Goldilocks, My Fair Lady, Camelot
Don Walker: Louisiana Purchase, Carousel, Finian's Rainbow, Call Me Madam, The Most Happy Fella, Cabaret, She Loves Me, Annie
Hershy Kay: On the Town, Candide, On the Twentieth Century
Ted Royal: Brigadoon, Paint Your Wagon, New Faces of '52
Sid Ramin: West Side Story, A Funny Thing Happened . . ., Gypsy, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue
Irwin Kostal: West Side Story, Tenderloin, A Funny Thing Happened . . ., Rex
"Red" Ginzler: Gypsy, How To Succeed in Business, Bye Bye Birdie, Wildcat
Jerome Moross, who went to Hollywood to orchestrate his friend Aaron Copland's score for The Heiress and made better money working in Hollywood first as orchestrator (Hans Christian Andersen) and later as a composer
Larry Wilcox: Walking Happy, Sherry, a wonderful writer whose demons destroyed him
Ralph Burns: Little Me, Funny Girl, No No Nanette (1970), Chicago

Broadway (1970- )
Jonathan Tunick, the best
Michael Gibson: in 1999 Michael Gibson asked me to co-orchestrate a show and I had to turn him down: I was having serious health issues caused by undiagnosed crushed discs in my neck and I could not hold a pencil; until his death, Michael replaced Don Walker as John Kander's go-to orchestrator
Michael Starobin: Rags, Assassins, his beautiful work on Sunday in the Park with George is best heard on the DVD of the Broadway production, not the CD
Bill Brohn: In 1985. I called him to tell him how wonderful his orchestrations were for the misguided The Wind in the Willows, but I run hot and cold on his work, which could be wonderful (Miss Saigon) or downright lousy (Mary Poppins)
HaroldWheeler: Rags, Sideshow
Luther Henderson: Ain't Misbehavin', Purlie

Great lists of orchestrators so far. I will single out some favorites:

Hershy Kay for On the 20th Century
Don Walker for Finian’s Rainbow
Maurice Peress and Hershy Kay, Candide
Harold Wheeler, Dreamgirls
Quincy Jones for The Wiz movie

Now is the month of maying,
When merry lads are playing, Fa La
Each with his bonny lass
Upon the greeny grass. Fa La

The Spring clad all in gladness,
And to the bagpipe's sound
The nymphs tread out their ground, Fa la

Fie then why sit we musing
Youth's sweet delight refusing? Fa La
Say dainty nymphs and speak,
Shall we play barley break? Fa La

Last night was great, wonderful seeing everyone.

A couple of people mentioned this, and I agree:  I have really missed the online Kritzerland shows and chats. Obviously those were created for a reason that doesn't apply now, but in their absence it's apparent they were a rich part of our online life. It's great to have that back, at present, with SAMI and last night's Zoom.

I have a rehearsal tonight -- not for a regular show, but a concert chorale thingy two weeks from now that's to be accompanied by a ten-piece band. My part in that is mostly some strings padding, but there's one tricky number requiring some synth effects that I must work on today.

West-Coasters will have to get up awfully early to participate. Of course, there's always DVRs.

That is, if you have any interest at all. Many don't.
