DR Jrand72:
BEST audition song this past weekend: "In My Dreams" from Anastasia. I don't know the show, but that's a beautiful song. I also like another one ("Journey to the Past") that's been placed in front of me recently, but not as much as this one.
There were two WORST songs: 1. Some hideous thing that was sort of disco-ish that was poorly copied, poorly marked, tough to sightread, and tough to follow the singer in ... because it was so poorly marked with her silly little cuts. An unbeatable combination. But even beyond that, it was just a crappy song. I'm sorry I don't even know what it was. I'll try to find out.
2. "Try to Remember" - brought in by a gentleman who's playing El Gallo a few towns over, as we speak. I'm supposed to see that production in a week and a half. But now I'm scared. Very scared. This is a guy who gets cast in a lot of mediocre productions (and he might very well be cast this time because, as usual, they're short on men), but I've never been able to stand his particular brand of mediocrity. Anyway, I wasn't surprised that he would choose the song, but I was stunned at the truly crappy sheet music arrangement he brought in. Again, this one was so poorly photocopied that you could hardly read the song title at the top of the page. And then he sang it just as horribly as it looked. It was stunning, and I was stunned.
These lucky winners were selected from only the dozen or so people who've shown up so far. It's been a low turnout. If I'm available when they have another round of auditions, who knows? Some lucky soul might stand a good chance of snatching one of the above two prizes.
