DR Ginny, if I understood correctly, you are buying a home in a retirement community, but renovation is included in the purchase price. Is that right? Will it be your names on the deed? I’m familiar with condo associations, but not what you describe. Is this a standard arrangement in Ohio? Are there restrictions on the exterior, such as certain colors?

He chewed me out for not taking care of my car and hosed it down. Had he done it out of consideration, that would have been appreciated. Or had he asked. He didn’t. I didn’t appreciate it. It wasn’t even all that dirty. It was his need to control. I’ve offered to pay him to wash it, but he wasn’t interested, even though it doesn’t take long once he’s doing his. At least twice he’s said he doesn’t want a dirty car next to his clean car. (Contagion?) I make double sure the skylight is closed and all the windows are up when I park it, knowing that he might decide it’s too dirty.

DR Jeanne, we’re “buying into” the retirement community, but we won’t own the house. There is an option just to rent, but that gives you next to no input into the renovation. By paying the entry fee, we were able to ask for a lot (and get most), plus we’ll have access to the “continuum of care” when we need things like assisted living, skilled nursing, or memory care.

I figured if he understood why your car is dirty he wouldn't berate you for it. I would think with his issues he would be begging you to let him wash your car out of kindness to both of you.

You are smart to keep your car ready for a washing, just in case-lol One thing, you never need to feel bad about him doing the work for you, or feel you need to do something nice for him
