When I moved into this apartment in 1980, the Barnes & Noble store at Broadway & 82nd Street was a Red Apple grocery, a rather run-down supermarket. One Sunday morning I was in line to check out, and there was a rather snooty middle-aged lady right in front of me. The cashier was a young African-American girl maybe in her early 20s. The cashier was slow, but pleasant, but I could see the lady in front of me was impatient to get out of the store. Then the lady in front of me got to the register, where she bitched ands criticized everything the young lady did.
When the cashier finished ringing her up and bagging her groceries, the lady said very rudely, Has anyone ever told you what an incompetent worker you are?
The cashier handed the lady her bag of groceries, smiled a big smile, and said, All the time.
I gave the cashier a tip.
