The insurance game is such a scam, and I think I’m nearing the time for another change only five years since the last one. I’ve been told by many people that you have to assume you’re going to change insurance companies every several years to keep your premiums reasonable.
I was with Farmers in California. When I moved here they had no presence in this area so I went with Allstate. That was okay for years until I had to make a small claim on the house, and the rate increases came like gangbusters. On a personal recommendation I changed to another company and that was a godsend … until after about three years, and with no claims at all, here come the increases.
It absolutely has to be related to age in the case of auto insurance. But they find additional ways to bump you up as well. When anyone you live with has an incident or makes a claim - on their own insurance, mind you - they find that because of the common address and raise you again. Why? They assume that at some point you’ll be driving each other’s cars. And so it goes.
