He also found a very bad cavity behind one of the fractured crowns, which will require an onlay. $$$ is now $$$$$.

That was what happened to me when I pulled out my filling that I had to replace with a crown. I was then charged for both visits and the extra temporary work.

Not that I understand how cavities form under crowns. It seems the tooth should be protected.
