I'm a collector, certainly, but it would be more accurate to say I dabble in collections.

I daresay (oh yes, I dare to say; sometimes I even dare to daresay) none would be worthy of being called a real collection by truly serious hardcore collectors, but I nevertheless have a few individual items that are without doubt rare and desirable.

Certainly in my few thousand records there are some nice treasures, but it's a selection tailored to my own personal tastes and not any sort of "completion" in any segment. This is probably like what DR Rodzinski is saying about his, with probably three times what I have. CDs round out some areas of this, of course.

Blu-rays, DVDs, and a few remaining laserdiscs are a collection, but the same disclaimer applies.

Other smaller collections are certain books; musical scores; a handful of film posters; a few types of maps; some vintage cameras and souvenir collectors plates and such, representing mid-century road travel; and no doubt a few other things that don't come to mind at the moment.

DR Jrand74 kills me whenever he reminds me of the first edition with dust jacket of Atlas Shrugged that entered into my life for a dollar, and left it permanently when a friend "borrowed" it a year or two later.

EDIT:  I later found a tenth printing (maybe not even that early, I'm not sure now and it's packed up at the moment). Certainly not of much value, but still nicer to have than any later reprint.

Two key backers of the San Antonio Philharmonic have demanded the return of their $180,000 contributions, which they say were loans.
The orchestra's CEO says they will contest the claim in court.

Bad night of sleep. Dreams involved words that do not exist and Dick Van Dyke. Cannot remember anything further.

I have an autographed first edition of Terry McMillan's first novel, Mama, with the dust jacket in good shape. I have a first edition copy of The Sun Also Rises but no dust jacket. I have autographed books by Ira Gershwin, Vernon Duke and Stephen Sondheim. I have a couple of autographed album covers, including Sophie the musical signed by Steve Allen and k.d. lang's first album, a truly western experience.

Reminds me of when they contacted Rose Marie about joining the cast of the Dick Van Dyke Show, and her response was, “What’s a Dick Van Dyke?”

What a strange set of circumstances.

Was it somehow not made clear when the $180,000 was handed over?

It's kind of like the UNLV quarterback deciding not to play any more games this season because he didn't get the money he was promised.....

This sounds like a matter of bait-and-switch!

Can it really be as outrageous as it seems from the article?

Mom’s church has a comfort dog, Mercy, who would visit her all the time. Before moving into assisted living, Mom would give Mercy carrots as a treat. This story reminded me of Mercy.

TOD: I collect CDs and wine, but for listening and drinking vs investing. I had run out of space for CD storage, but then I discovered Space Saving Sleeves and now I have room to buy CDs again: https://spacesavingsleeves.com/

Thank you, DR singdaw. I've just placed my order.

It looks like you can place only one order per address, so that would be it for this household - right? For some reason I'm thinking we were each able to order one in the past, but I think it's pretty clear that isn't the case now...if it even was then, I could be wrong.

What a hardship it is to have to buy more CDs.

What kinds of wine do you like?

We like pretty much anything good! As long as it's not the overly alcoholic styles that came into vogue with Robert Parker. We're surrounded by fine wine here in northern California and have enjoyed visits to many European wine regions over the years.

When we performed Don Giovanni a few years ago I had to try some Marzemino, the wine that the Don has for his final meal. So I got some shipped in from a store in New York - the shipping cost more than the wine. It was a decent regional northern Italian red, nothing remarkable.

I believe this is one of the first examples of product placement in entertainment. My theory is that Da Ponte had a relative or friend in the Marzemino wine trade.

This has been a weird week between my health and other occurrences. I did finish "Together wherever we go," so I'm very pleased abpout that. My eye seems to be clearing up, so I don't thionk I had an actual eye infection; I tyhink it's collateral damage from the cold I appear to be fighting.
