My favorite things about this past year are few, sad to say. The most memorable positives are my two cataract surgeries which have allowed me to discard wearing glasses for anything (except sun glasses, that is).

Another positive is the truly wonderful tale of Fred written by Rodzinski. I really enjoyed reading it, and it would make a wonderful feel-good movie with character studies aplenty.

I tried to listen, as well, but it did not sound like his voice to me. Wasn't that an AI-generated reading?

Some least favorite things of the year include Hurricane Helene which devastated much of Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina...and caused damage elsewhere, as well.

It's always strange to me when I drive down a road I haven't been on since the hurricane and find so many downed or uprooted trees, often huge ones. And in areas where trees have been cleared, it's shocking to see what fallen trees did to homes they fell upon. I consider myself extremely lucky to have survived it unscathed.

Last evening, I thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality of my cousin Chad and his wife Courtney. He had a Christmas "do" for local relatives including his mother, Debra, his sister Becky and her husband Evan, his uncle Butch and his fiancee Sharon, and me, his "favored" cousin. The house was warm, beautifully decorated, and there was plenty of snacking food. Dinner was rib-eye steaks Chad cooked outdoors, roasted zucchini with onions, baked potatoes and a wonderful Caesar salad (without chicken).

While we adults really enjoyed ourselves, the house belonged to the children. Chad and Courtney have two daughters, Brynlee and Allie, ages 3 and 1 1/2, respectively. Becky and Evan have Audrey, also 3, and Levi who is 8 months old. Levi was fascinated by me for some reason. He just stared at me and smiled a lot. I got a kick out of that.

The little girls were all about dressing up, playing, hurting each other's feelings, screaming at the top of their lungs and being very excited about opening presents.

I arrived at 4:45 p.m. and departed at 7:15 p.m. The meal was delicous. Chad is a whiz with the grill.

Yesterday afternoon I had my weekly Zoom chat with like-minded film-music-lovers. There were only five of us this week as others had holiday plans.

One of the guys, Marhsall Harvey (BK's editor on a few projects), regaled us with stories about working on a Tournament of Roses float. It's a huge project, and it's taking a lot of time. He suggested that since my Christmas gathering was early that I should fly out to LA and help them cover the float with flowers, etc. As interesting as that sounds, I took a pass. If I still lived in California, I'd have taken him up on it, though. It sounds interesting, and if the float turns out to look like the artistic rendering he showed us, it should take a major prize.

Another member, Henry Stanny, seconded Marshall's invite and said I would be welcome at his end-of-year party on the 29th. That sounded great, too. I would dearly love to meet these guys because they are genuinely nice people. Bruce has worked with Henry as the EMCEE on concerts Henry puts together.

I have a Friday appointment with my ENT doctor to discuss a sleep study.

I had one nearly 10 years ago which led to my getting a CPAP machine. The County of Alameda had a medical plan with Kaiser, and it was they who not only provided the CPAP but also all support for same. When I retired and relocated to SC, the VA took up my CPAP support based on copies of the sleep study I had obtained from Kaiser.

A couple of weeks ago, my CPAP started making noises. These noises were very irritating. I could fall asleep using the machine, but I would wake up at 3:30 or 4 a.m. and not be able to fall back asleep. It's difficult to describe the sound, as I first thought it might be "me" causing the noise...as if the air pressure was causing my nasal passages to whistle. I heard it loudly in my head, so it wasn't something I could pinpoint. I Googled the issue and learned that these noises indicate that the CPAP machine was possibly wearing out.

I turned to the VA to request a new machine. They said i would need a new sleep study as regulations had changed requiring sleep studies to be done every 10 years before they would replace a machine. Sigh. I was told a request for a sleep study had been entered into the VA system, but it may take a long time and I shoudl go to my ENT if I wanted faster results.

And so, Friday afternoon, I will visit the doctor who had previously helped me with my hearing loss and with my nasal polyps.

There is an upshot to that previous tale:

Two nights ago, I used my CPAP and it made no noise at all. I slept peacefully through the night. Same again last night.

Still, the machine is old and should be replaced, so I'm going to go through it all again.
